However, having tried to commute Bristol to Cheltenham by train recently, they've got a very long way to go if they want to make cars more inconvenient than public transport. I've not done the usual PH thing of being determined to take the car, even actively wanting to use public transport doesn't make it even slightly convenient or cost effective.
They could line up hundreds of snipers with machine guns on the M32, landmines up Park Street and station 10 tank battalions on Clifton triangle and it'd still be touch and go whether I took the train or not.

Won't achieve anything. This is basically EU(SSR) policy and the government passes the unpleasant hot potato downwards.
About the only thing you can do is remember the names involved and de-select them.

Read an anti-car story and its the EU's fault? Oh FFS, get a life!!
This bullshyte has been written by a very anti-car lobby with vested interests of its own. You wouldn't expect First Bus to be supporting its opposition, would you?
Anyway, this is "old thinking" that won't get off the ground now that we have the spending cuts kicking in. Any traffic management scheme that doesn't pay for itself one way or another will not be going ahead.

Just in case anybody is interested, there is a clip on Youtube of Bristol in the late 1920s
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FG2CRD-fjc
There was congestion even back then, only a lot of it was caused by horses and carts jostling for room!
If there were no bleedin' cars at all in the centre of Bristol, congestion would be caused by the pedestrians, the buses and the traffic lights

It seems that Bristol City Council intend to continue spunking taxpayers' cash on anti-car measures as if nothing has happened. http://www.thisisbristol.co.uk/news/City-council-p...
With respect, that's a non-story, isn't it? 12 parking spaces going in a city the size of Bristol, and not exactly central anyway. But having said that, I have my doubts that even something like this will go ahead because it will have a marginal negative effect on income. Councils will need to be very very very careful in future about their income streams. There are two things that need to be remembered by the Council. The first is that if you make using private vehicles too unpleasant, some people will stop coming into the city centre. This will have an impact on shops, business rates and ultimately the council's income.
The second thibng they need to remember is that Cribbs Causeway is easier to get to, has free parking, and the shops there pay their business rates to South Gloucestershire

Actually there's hardly any metered street parking left anywhere in Central Bristol.
I must admit that its been years since I tried to park in central Bristol. When I go there by car these days, I tend to park somewhere around Old Market Street/ Counterslip and walk in.I've always had a major personal problem with paying to park my car
