I have a VXR8 if thats what you meant.
Servicing is £150 for first couple of service's then £200 for 30,000 service
I'm 27 with no points or previous claims, parked in a secure carpark my insurance is £1200 for me and the wife.
for fuel its around 27mpg at 70 on the motorway, drops down to 13-19 around town and when making progress.
Make sure he goes for a drive in an auto as well as a manual

I have owned my R8 for about 6 months. It is a cracking car to own and drive, and cheap to buy, given its class. Dealers were selling new R8's discounted to £24k - £27k last year, not a bad discount. Second hand values have been adjusted accordingly, you would pick up a good 09 one owner, less than 5,000 mile car for about £20k now.
As to running costs, the service bills are no more or less than you would expect to pay. My first service was about £150. The real cost comes from fuel, and to some extent tyres. I'm lucky to get 20mpg from mine, in traffic it's single figures and on tickover the trip changes from MPG to gallons per hour! With super unleaded at over £1.30 and still heading higher a tank fill is now about £80 and from that I get maybe 200-250 miles. Tyres wise I got through the rears on 10,000 miles, and I was not going mad with them. Retail is £250 per tyre, discounted you can find at maybe £150 ish. The list prices on standard parts are pretty horrendous, I'm not looking foward to the day when I have to replace discs, lights etc.
My criticisms of the car are:
Big A pillar blind spot.
Vauxhall badges.
Seat belt bleeper.
Very poor radio, no RDS.
Poor quality paint, I'm told it is water based, very prone to stone chips.
Rear lights get condensation inside, every owner says the same.
But it's various short-comings are more than outweighed by its good points, right now I would not swap for anything. There is an excellent forum on PH, take a look, there is also excellent support provided by a few specialists. Buy one and you won't be disappointed.
