hi there ,been involved in hillclimbing and sprinting for over twenty years now ,used too come down to werrington park years ago (think i still hold some records downthere!!).
as for the choise of car you should think about either roadgoing or modified in a saloon ,keeping it road legal has its advantages in that you learn the car and how far you can push it much qiucker but also always in the back of your mind is that you have to drive it home after!!! or you can trailer your car ,but then you have to have somewhere to store that aswell !!
if you want to join the 1400-1800 class a golf is a good starting point ,what about a polo ,saxo ,fiesta ect ,anyway good luck in whatever you decide to choose one thing i know is you will love it its great fun and you will want to go faster from day one !its very addictive !

Chris, I was there all weekend competing in limited production class B3 (westfield)
If your interested in motorsport get yourself over to St. Eval on the 23rd for the sprint. Talk to the drivers, we're all petrolheads and you'll have no problem in getting people to talk about their cars.
I don't know alot about specs for the othr classes but it is hoghly regulated and controlled. You'll prbably find yourself better starting off in full roadgoing where a decent set of road slicks and little other modifications will get you competing.
Be warned though, it is addictive, and bloody expensive even at the bottom of the ladder. When your looking and comparing most of the cars there, bare in mind that nothing is hardly 'standard spec' especially with the competetive cars. The money alot of us spend on the race cars would for certain buy us nice BMW/Porsche/TVR type road cars..... but we just prefer something alittle faster!
Get yourself to the local events and you'll find out all you want to know.
