Gloucester airport Help for Heroes sports car day 24th July
Discussion
Date for the event is now set for Saturday 24th July
The car list can be found here: http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0... airport Help for Heroes sports car day: Car list
Please add yourself to the list and Y or N to the track day sessions and passenger ride sessions.
Updates below
This is something I've been meaning to sort for a while now, and today I finally got round to seeing the airport management who think its a great idea. Now the plan is either A: you pay to blast around the airport track day style (a good circuit can be made from the perimeter taxiways and runways, they used to have bike races here many years ago apparently) for the evening. B: people pay for a passenger ride in your pride and joy (similar to what the sporting bears charity does at the classic car show) or C: a mix of the two i.e. one session for you to blast around and then the next for passenger rides etc etc.
It will take place on the evening of Saturday 24th July.
Thanks all,
James
Update 1
The first meeting with the airport went very well. The plan is to have not only the cars going round, but also to have other things to do, with stalls, hog roast, bouncy castle and other entertainment for the kids, provisionally (as they may be flying) "have a photo of your car next to an executive jet", balloons taking off early in the evening, charity auction etc etc. And we're going to try and get some of the local car dealerships interested. It will also get alot of press covereage in the form of local newspapers and the airport management know one of the BBC points West news team so hopefully they'll help to spread the word aswell. There are other things that we're going to try and do aswell and I'll keep you posted on the updates.
The only change is that the date will be moved to July now and I'll do my best to make sure it avoids any big events such as Goodwood (the original date is the only one that the airport can't do). A decision will be made by tomorrow on the exact date (it will be a saturday) and then I will be setting up a facebook group to help spread the word and I will add the ph'ers that I have on facebook to that group and the members of the south west ph's crew group and then hopefully word will spread far and wide.
All in all its looking to be a great event and the airport would like it to become an annual event.
Thats all for now,
Cheers,
James

I think option B for me, raise as much cash as possible for the cause :-)
if the whole evening is given up to charity pax rides it gives people as much chance as possible to get out different cars. maybe they buy a ticket and get in the queue which ever car pulls up in the pitlane next they jump in and so on...

I think we ought to run it similar to the Stroke Association day some of us attended at Castle Coombeif the whole evening is given up to charity pax rides it gives people as much chance as possible to get out different cars. maybe they buy a ticket and get in the queue which ever car pulls up in the pitlane next they jump in and so on...

for instance:
Group A cars (example: TVR/Ferrari/Noble): £25 for X Pax laps
Group B cars (example: Z4/Caterham/Focus ST): £15 for X pax laps
As I wouldnt expect somebody to donate as much for a ride in mine as a ride in an exotic
Then have 30 minutes for Group A, followed by 30 minutes for Group B (this way, you also keep the 2 seprate on track so Diablo's and the like arent getting held up by the slower stuff)
Would it be possible to use a "Just Giving" web page to take ride money?
That way someone could donate the appropriate amount for a Group A or Group B ride and you could simply tick them off a list as they file through?
(this would obviously require working out some averages for how many laps we could get in)
I would add that I for one would need to get a bit of experience under my belt prior to this as I have never driven anywhere but on the road (that and I'm crap!) - I would imagine quite a few are in this position (not the crap bit!)

Another idea -
make the car list via Wiki list only, that way this thread can be kept for updates and ideas?
Obviously if get enough exotics I'd be happy (no doubt along with others) to back out to make room for them and thus maximising the revenue for H4H

Yeah we had discussed having different groups of cars arranged by pace as we don't want people tripping over eachother. The prices you put AA are probably around about what we'll go for (we hadn't discussed it yet) as they are reasonable and would therefore be affordable to more people.
Does anyone know how to urn the list ( http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0... airport Help for Heroes sports car day: Car list ) into one of those sticky's so it remains at the top of the south west section?

Been thinking about this - I have the Maser available and my track day MX-5 too.
I'm happy to drive the Maser , so the MX-5 either sits empty, or if anybody has the interest, but no car to drive, I'm happy to let somebody else use it for the night.
I only live a few minutes away, so easy for me to get there.
So, if anybody wants an MX-5 to drive on the night, just let me know, it's yours.
No idiots please...!

Can't commit to that date until much nearer the time. Tax/insurance will be out on the BMW by then and it's likely to become just a track car. Cost of hiring trailer etc to get across town for an hour or so of track time isn't looking worth it. Situation may change, but I don't want to take up a place in the meantime.

Sorry for the lack of updates for a while guys, both myself and the airport have been extremely busy recently and havn't managed to get together, the next meeting I have with them is on monday to finalise the exact plan of action, chances are there will be both vmax runs on the runway and a circuit incorporating the runways and taxiways. The driving side of things will be limited unfortunately from 1930 to sunset. However I'll try and get a large area cordoned off for the event so it can start earlier and you can all walk around taking a look at the cars and stalls etc. After that meeting I will be contacting the local dealers of fast/exotic machinery to see if they'd like to come along (we already have one dealer of rapid german machinery interested) and we will really get the ball rolling on organising the various things we have planned.
After the meeting I will post the final plan of action on here and set up a facebook page and the airport will set about getting the event advertised in the local press etc.
Cheers,
James
