Hi,

I'm moving to Bristol to start a new position in the next 5 weeks. I'm going to be working in Thornbury, which I suppose is technically south Gloucester.

I want a safe and decent area to house share with other 'young professionals' that's not more than 30 minutes drive from Thornbury.

Any ideas?

Thank you

Posted this in the General Gassing group and was told to re-post here...

I was undecided on what car to buy after months of deliberating!

Firstly, don't look for somewhere to live in South Gloucester.

If you're after somewhere lively and sociable, personally I'd look at Cheltenham. Montpelier or Lansdown, both near the M5 so about 30mins from Thornbury, but you'll be missing the M4/M5 interchange which can be problematic. Having spent many years in North Bristol, I wouldn't choose to go back there.

Am sure others may not agree, but that's my opinion for what it's worth.

Think Gav's spot on here for the interchange

Also, more likely to get a "young professional" house in Chelters as opposed to a "young partying students" house share in Bristol, which from when I house shared in Reading is something you need to watch (assuming, like me, you like to keep your partying to the weekends and dont like being woken up at 4am on a Wednesday morning when you have to be up for work at 7am?)

I'm guilty of that suggestion smile
I thought the OP might get a better response from local people rather than the global one from his original forum.

Should the OP decide the commute fom Cheltenham is practical then I concur with that choice of domicile. I've lived in Cheltenham & Bristol and would plump for the former if I could - always IMHO of course,

My digs are in Bradley Stoke and whilst I wouldn't want to buy there (I don't like modern estates but that is my personal preference and no criticism of those who do is implied) it has easy transport links and simple to get to Thornbury avoiding all the motorways.

As I said it is a bit of a "modern estate" but is well served by train, bus, roads and cycle paths as well as other amenities. Also it is fairly cheap and far enough away to avoid the student areas and with plenty of choices for rental.

Depends on what you are after really

mep is right, Bradley Stoke is ok if you're after digs. Depends if you're just after a place to crash or a decent social life.

Rental properties will be relatively cheap, you'll get space to park etc and Thornbury is just up the road. For convenience it's hard to beat.

But drive through it first, see if it appeals.

I like Chipping Sodbury, but I can understand why it wouldn't suit everyone.

Decent (if slightly odd) curry house.

I used to live in Emersons Green and while it's slightly pricey, it's a nice place to live. Decently connected (the ring road will get you where you need to go), the area's quiet and free of trouble, and the town centre has just what you need. Pub, supermarket, petrol station, doctors, gym and some eateries.

If you want to go out into town though, a taxi back's £20-odd quid at night rates. So either stay at a mate's or drive smile hth

Cheltenham's lovely, but expensive. House prices are still very, er, strong; and rentals are just crazy expensive. Plenty of house shares, but there's also a large student population so plenty of awful housemates and plenty of dodgy landlords. For ease of commuting look at Hatherley and Leckhampton, J11 and J11a respectively, although anything south or west of the one way system will be easy to get to the M5 from.

If I was commuting to Bristol, I'd be looking at Hucclecote in Gloucester which is fairly nice and right next to J11a. Stroud should also not be discounted (J13), it's got a reputation for being a bit wierdy beardy but it's got plenty of nice places to live.

Today, driving past Winterbourne Cricket Club, there was a very large manor style house advertising “Rooms to Let”, now what better environment could the OP have, than living in a rural country setting, opposite a cricket ground/drinking club, 3 local pubs, shops within walking distance, and 20 minutes commute by car to Thornbury.

Swan, Masons, Cross Hands and George & Dragon are all pants though. Nearest worthwhile boozer is Rising Sun.
New Indian; Taj Brasserie however is very good.
