Gloucester Airport Sport & Supercar day: Help for Heroes
Discussion
Date for the event is now set for Saturday 24th July
Updates below
This is something I've been meaning to sort for a couple of months now, and today I finally got round to seeing the airport management just before lunch who think its a great idea. Now the plan is either A: you pay to blast around the airport track day style (a good circuit can be made from the perimeter taxiways and runways, they used to have bike races here many years ago apparently) for the evening. B: people pay for a passenger ride in your pride and joy (similar to what the sporting bears charity does at the classic car show) or C: a mix of the two i.e. one session for you to blast around and then the next for passenger rides etc etc.
This would have to be in the summer due to the fact that it could only take place in the evening after the airport shuts at 19:30 until sunset. Although of course passenger rides on the public roads a la Sporting Bears charity at the Classic Car Show could take place at any time and this is also a possibility.
It would most likely be a Saturday evening and would be a great event. If you would like to take part please add your name to the list in the second post and put yes or no to the track day style idea or the passenger ride idea, of course both of these may take place side by side but as this is only in the early stages of planning only time will tell what format it eventually takes.
Thanks all,
James
Update 1
I'm going to be meeting with the airport on Monday about the event to sort dates, times and exactly what format it will take (first half just pax laps then the second being the track day style or just alternating between sessions of pax laps then track laps then pax etc etc). And of course I will keep the most important people, being you guys, very much in the loop. I will also discuss the insurance/disclaimers questions with them and will report back on Monday evening.
If anyone has any ideas they would be welcomed, I want to do this right so your input is vital to the events success.
The things that I would appreciate your opinions on are:
Length of the track time sessions.
Price of the track time sessions.
Amount of pax laps per ticket.
Cheers,
James
Update 2
Well the meeting went very well. The plan is to have not only the cars going round, but also to have other things to do, with stalls, hog roast, bouncy castle and other entertainment for the kids, provisionally (as they may be flying) "have a photo of your car next to an exec jet", balloons taking off early in the evening. And we're going to try and get some of the local car dealerships interested. It will also get alot of press covereage in the form of local newspapers and the airport management know one of the BBC points West news team so hopefully they'll help to spread the word aswell. There are other things that we're going to try and do aswell and I'll keep you posted on the updates.
The only change is that the date will be moved to July now and I'll do my best to make sure it avoids any big events such as Goodwood (the original date is the only one that the airport can't do). A decision will be made by tomorrow on the exact date (it will be a saturday) and then I will be setting up a facebook group to help spread the word and I will add the ph'ers that I have on facebook to that group and the members of the south west ph's crew group and then hopefully word will spread far and wide.
All in all its looking to be a great event and the airport would like it to become an annual event.
Thats all for now,
Cheers,
James

can somebody explain how to add my name to the table please
There may be an easier way but I just discovered that if you click on 'quote' against the relevant post, it brings up The quoted reply box which has a bunch of text like this ..."||memberMarlboroCar/member||Adrian||Spire GTR ||Y||Y||"
All you have to is copy and paste it into the next line and edit accordingly. Click on preview to make sure everything looks right and hit submit.

assuming the dates don't clash with stuff already on I'm right up for this.
Is there anywhere we can try top speed out?

Dates and weather dependant.
Wow the list is looking pretty good now .
The date will be sometime around the end of June as the longest day is on the 21st I think, and we want as much daylight as possible.
Chimtvr, I should think that straight line blasts down the main runway would be possible, although its not quite a mile long so its not exactly massive.
Any suggestions for the event would be welcome, as I said none of the details are set in stone at this stage so if you've got an idea please do put it forward.
If anyone who doesn't know how to add themselves to the list wants to be put on, just PM me your details and I'll add you.
Cheers,
James

Avoid Mid June as its Le Mans, and a little after its classic Le Mans. Overlapping with the main race would thin the list out somewhat IMO
Its quite a tight window because you are probably best avoiding the school holidays when many people will be away - or you could argue that the other way round and say with the right publicity you could get lots of families there looking for rides in nice cars.
edited to add slightly relevant waffle :-)
