Well, Optimax Sniffer has decided to try and make an honest woman of me so now we are on the hunt for a wedding venue. I've had a flick through the magazines but nothing beats personal recommendation.

Our rough requirements are:

Get married at the venue
About 70 people to ceremony, 180 to evening
Hog roast in evening (that is Iain's only request so far!!)
Informal feel - nothing too poncy
Ability to have a live band in the evening
Accomodation at venue or very near by

Venues that are out (either because friends have married there or based on past experience) are:
Any golf club
Cadbury House
Tortworth Court
Tracy Park

I've already contacted a few places on this thread about venues near WSM, so thank you if you have contributed on there: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... wedding venues nr WSM&mid=88469

Any other hidden gems? We're looking to keep costs reasonable (we'd rather spend the money on cars or holidays!) so nothing too pricey please!!

Thanks for your help

Sarah

Try the Dormy House Hotel at Broadway (actually its just up the hill) Nice hotel, not too poncey and we had a live rock band there for joint 40th birthday.

Its in a lovely location, the room rates are reasonable and there are lots of B&B's in the area too.

Goldbrick House? You could have the hog roast on the roof terrace, nice Marriott just down Park Street or the new 5* Raddisson about 1 minute further.

Manor House at Castle Combe - I don't think the hotel is physically connected to the golf course. Bonus points for proximity to track day action.

How about the Bath Assembly Rooms? They can do the ceremony and the reception.

Bristol Zoo - could make the hog roast interesting - went to a wedding last year.

I think the new pier at weston is opening this summer - may be of interest

Good luck

We got married here. It's a fantastic Victorian gothic pile and the guy who runs it (or did 8 years ago) is great. It is (or was wink) a school so it's a bit battered below about 4 feetbiggrin

Thank you all - most of your suggestions are on the list of places to investigate and if they weren't, they are now!

If any of you have an old house and a bit of land - get into the wedding business. It's incredible what some places are happy to charge you, just to hire the venue - before you get so much as a sniff of a twiglet!!

Congrats to both of you, a word of warning on a hogroast, I've been to several weddings with hog roasts and the options have been pork... or pork, which is great if you like pork, but many people don't. Ended up very hungry!

Make sure you have some burgers etc cooking as well yes

Is it too late to tell you that there is wedding fayre at Stanton House Hotel near Swindon this Sunday? It's a lovely village and worth a walk around the lake if nothing else!

(Moving back to Swindon soon so trying to find some PH things to do in the area!)

Thanks for the info. We have chosen the venue, and it was actually my 6 year old niece that came up with the idea! (no, it's not a soft play area!!)

Keeping mum on it for now, as we have a few other things to put into place but we're very excited about it all.

Less than 8 months to go until the big day...!

An old drinking acquaintance of mine does pigs and stuff: Oli's Hogs. As above, he does other stuff too from roast lamb to paella.
