I am gradually trying to get my girlfriend's place sorted out! It will all be of benefit when we sell it next year and consolidate into one, and I quite enjoy general house tinkering.

Therefore, I need two tradesmen, your recommendations are welcome-

1. Plumber to install outside tap. Very, very simple job as there is suitable plumbing directly behind the wall in question. Beyond my DIY comfort zone.

2. Security installer- Basically need to replace an alarm control panel that has been fried by a power surge, and also want to install covert external CCTV- Nothing fancy, maybe 2 IR cameras, DVR and remote access.

Your suggestions please...

ETA- We are in Cotham, Bristol.

You can buy outside tap kits for that sort of job, don't even need to turn the water off.

Just drill through the wall, attach the fiytment and tighten up with a spanner which cuts through the pipe and seals at the same time.

See linky

We use a local plumber, has serviced our boiler for a few years now. Independant chap whose son has now joined him. I'll need to get his details off hubby. Good rates he charged £90 to service boiler and fit new sink and taps this year (Sink and taps was more complicated than originally thought)
Not sure how much distance he covers we are based Whitchurch way. I'll PM his details.

For security I use OCS:http://www.ocs.co.uk

The guys that do my system are based in Bristol, they really know their stuff and never fob or bullst me off

One of their Bristol engineers Terry did my alarm control pannelhe know loads about CCTV, really knew his onions.

Sorry they are a bugger to get in touch with, I would ring their main number and ask for Bristol Security

If it was me I'd look at somthing like this:

Sounds good, considering I paid about the same for just a boiler service- Await his details with baited breath!

That does look pretty good. I was slightly put off by Maplin stuff by the one I seized from a store which didn't work- However I think that was probably set-up problems.

TBH, the tap kits are attractively priced, however once I've hired a large drill to get through the wall (Large Victorian flat, outside wall) I think I may as well pay someone. The spot in question is right in the middle of lots of gas piping etc around the boiler too so I would consider it danger money well spent!

The maplin kits are OK, I find they are designed for "enthusiasts" in they somtimes take a bit of knowledge and faffing to get set-up to their full potential. I have used them to cover the office premises I work at and they did the job to a good standard considering the price. At the end of the day you get what you pay for.

Ta! Have it now. It unfortunately offened the Hotmail spambots, and I can't access the junk folder from my iPhone!

Might give it a go. I have seen plenty around for the £50 mark or thereabouts. All of the wiring is there, just need to connect to appropriate sections so shouldn't be rocket science (Famous last words!!). Might add a reed switch to the front door- Somewhat odd omission!

The plumber he has referred us to is coming out but not til next Tues! Won't recommend him yet as not used him ourselves, our plumber reassured us that he was a good guy! Busy guys obviously.

This guy is excellent:

http://www.vaillantrepairandservice.co.uk/

Used him many times. He's fairly priced, does a great job and is ultra reliable. Won't try and do work or sell you anything you don't need.

He might only do Vaillants, but he's worth a call to check and see.

HTH

eta - doubt he'd want to fit a tap, but he's very handy with boilers!
