Afternoon all,

My plans to take the missus out for Valentine's Day dinner on the Saturday have been scuppered by a mutual good mate having a surprise birthday party that night.

I've decided we need to go somewhere new for a nice lunch, and out of the city - lived in plymouth for 7 years. I want to take the car out for a hoon somewhere either Cornwall or North or West Devon, anything that doesn't involve the bloody A38 down to Exeter.

If it wasn't for the latter part of non A38 east driving I would go to the Puffing Billy near Lympstone. I'm half thinking about going to Padstein perhaps, just so you can get the gist of what I mean. And if you haven't tried the Puffing Billy, it's awesome....

Any suggestions from the ph locals? The key is a nice Valentine's place, not like the plume of feathers or other good Sunday pubs. Decent fun roads would be a bonus.

Ta in advance.

Keep it stiff

Forget going out, why pay a premium for the date? Stay at home, dress the table, rose, candle & stuff, order in some special food to keep warn in the oven etc. She will love the special effort and you can spend the saving on something more worthwhile! Everyone's a winner!

Our Anni is on Valentines (never forget that way, see?)

We never go out on Valentines now as you end up paying over the odds for sub standard food and service in packed restaurants

Far better to leave it a day/week

I find even the best restaurants go to pot on Valentines

Local recommendation suggests the Miners Arms in Hemerdon. It's on the edge of the moor, so I can have a morning bimble with the hood down and eat about 5 miles from the house, therefore close enough to come back and watch the rugby afterwards too....
