After your local knowledge if I may. On the hunt for wedding venues for myself and GI Jane and just wandered if you had any recommendations of any nearby.

The current first choice is Coombe Lodge just outside Blagdon. A really nice rustic, 'warm' venue. For not an unreasonable amount of money we get the run of the place all day.

If you know the place, you'll have an idea about what we really like about the place - Victorian design with rural grounds and totally 'non-corporate hotel' atmosphere...

The 1:15 staff to guest ratio also impressed me.

Free invite to the evening for the winning suggestion. smile

How far out from W-S-M would you be willing to look at?

Have been to a wedding at Combe Lodge and, as you say, it was a great venue...felt like we were in someone's house from the 1900's.

You could try Cadbury House in Congresbury
http://www.cadburyhouse.com/

Winford Manor in Winford
http://www.winfordmanor.co.uk/ (link seems to be down at the mo')

even Webbington Hotel (thought it looks a bit airport-hotel stylee IMO)
http://www.bestwestern.co.uk/Hotels/Best-Western-W...

Have heard good reports of Cadbury House but no direct experience of weddings there

My sister had her reception here near Lympsham (I think they can do the ceremony there aswell): http://www.batchcountryhotel.co.uk/ it was about 8 years ago now but it was certainly nice then, and they'll even let you arrive in style by chopper, which was a surprise for the guests biggrin

We got married at The Battleborough Grange near Brent Knoll and had the evening reception there, really good day couldn't fault it. . We had great weather and the pictures came out a treat, which was good as we got married outside!

Out of the venues suggested so far, I'd opt for either Combe Lodge or Cadbury House.

They both have excellent staff and the venues are very well maintained. One or two of the other venues mentioned could do with a bit of tlc.

Which other venues have you considered?

How far away from WSM would you consider travelling? I could recommend several other very good venues within 15 or so miles.

If you require any music for your wedding, please check out the link in my profile!

Cheers

If that distance is ok, you could also try Whatley Manor - www.whatleymanor.com (in the lovely village of ttley). Michelin starred so very nice indeed.

We had our reception in Leigh Court (got married in St Mary Redcliffe) & although it was pretty pricey it was a great day. Its not to far from WSM but I didnt mention it before as I thought it was a bit far.

How about the first couple to tie the knot on the new Pier?! biggrin

Congratulations!!

A friend at work got married at Bristol Zoo.

As fourstarGTR said we got married at the Battleborough Grange - and whilst it is not as upmarket as Cadbury we found them extremely flexible and the big draw was being able to get married outside - and the pig roast in the evening was good!

As we found when we were looking at the end of the day it depends on budget and how many guests, and exactly what type of ceremony you want.

Personally I've been to weddings at the Webbington, the Royal, Rookery Manor, and to a wedding reception at Cadbury - I didnt find any of them especially outstanding for what I know people paid.

As for music - we had a harpist for the ceremony and drinks reception whilst photos were being taken, and I can thoroughly recommend her.

Good luck with the planning!

We got married here, brilliant day, travelled from Weston approx. 1 hour away.

Edited because the wife wanted to add her bit!!

We were put off by Cadbury at the time because they do more than one wedding a day, the wife didn't want to bump into another bride on her special day. Things might have changed now?

My mum is a registrar in WSM and does weddings so may well do yours! (she has a pink Figaro so you won't be able to miss her!).

What with work always a topic of conversation, from what I can gather it sounds like either Leigh Court or Coombe Lodge are two of the best, closely followed by Cadbury.

Good luck! smile

Used to work in the grounds of Coombe Lodge, had many a fantastic company 'do' there - good call I'd say

Had our Wedding (daytime) reception at the Webbington and..........

(PH no naming and shaming policy stops my comments in their tracks on that one)

Purely on the basis that once a year the Webbington was turned into a full scale binge drinking carnival complete with a thousand students, a proper pikey funfair and several hundred gallons of puke, I wouldn't have it high on my wedding venue list.
