I've lived in this neck of the woods for over half a century, and I've never heard of it.
There is a Hanging Hill beyond Beach going up towards Lansdown.
That could well be it...a friend has said he thinks it was called Hangmans Hill, hanging hill could also be itThere is a Hanging Hill beyond Beach going up towards Lansdown.
These places def exist, I've been on a tour of Barbados in a Landie full of people parked on this slope and it rolled up the hill, I was sat in the front so could see it wasn't simply the driver having a laugh, in fact he wasn't going to show us as its not part of the tour but my mate had heard of it so we took a little detour, didn't realise there was a place around here though, if you find it let me know

Optical illusion - it looks like the road is climbing but it's really flat or slightly downhill. Could be due to hedge-lines alongside the road - if they are climbing even if the road isn't it could appear that the car is rolling uphill.MudSkipper said:

The map refuses to appear in the preview pane, but if you click the link you'll see it.
I thought Hanging Hill Lane was the one up from Beach towards the lane from Upton Cheyney to the Wick-Lansdown road (Hanging Hill cottage is opposite the T junction and was derelict for years, but has been restored now) but, now I look at the map, it looks more likely to be the "cul de sac" lane that leads east from Upton Cheyney up to Hanging Hill itself.
And, looking at the contours shown, it may well be that there is a bit of level or downhill as you go uphill (if you get my drift )

Hi
Just spotted this 12 year old post and thought I should reply!
I used to go here with my friends in my teens and it really feels like you are rolling uphill. Unfortunately it is actually on the A-road after a bend so too dangerous to try now - I’ve tried it in several cars and a type 2 camper… it starts at this Oak tree facing north:

And you get pulled all the way up through those trees … sure it’s an illusion though with lie of the land 🤔
