Anyone know this Pub?
Discussion
The Greyhound Fenny Bridges, Nr Honiton
Can anyone supply a little info for the above pub? It looks like a nice prospect but I don't know the area and any local knowledge would be helpful.
It used to be a half decent Carvery with B&B potential but is presently closed.
Please don't hesitate to email if you can shed any info.
Many Thanks,

Wow, blast from the past, I haven't been there for years.
It used to be on the main road but the new road now runs adjacent to it so I would suggest there is virtually no passing trade, it has a large car park IIRC.
It's too far out of Honiton to get walking trade and I can't imagine that there is much local trade.
It used to be a really nice pub, good food and a nice atmosphere but that was late 80's.

looking for an 'escape to the country' or thinking about licking the windows to bring it back to former glory?
Possibly a bit of both, after owning suburban boozers a change of scenery may be the way forward. I think the building of the new road has all but killed the trade, but that said there is always a need for decent pubs with quality food and well kept choice ales.At the end of the day I don't fancy an overly busy lifestyle with long hours that usually entails in the pub trade but a nice quaint country pub that's not too far from the beach with B&B potential certainly appeals.
Might be worth renaming it The Pie n Piston
Before it closed it had got a fair bit quieter since the opening of the new stretch of A30. It did though seem to have a reasonable size group of local regulars and yes, the carvey pulled in a few. The big garden helped in the summer attract families. Perhaps more could be made of the garden? The thatched roof is looking very tired - don't know if that is due for replacement, but a fair outlay if it is. Don't know if advertising from the main road is the done thing, but it is only a short diversion for passing lunch stoppers.

what's more important is where's the nearest TVR Indie and any decent Carp Lakes in the area?
on a serious note are you local? I only ask as Cheshire is long way to travel to view a 'dead duck'
I live at Honiton, about 2 miles away.what's more important is where's the nearest TVR Indie and any decent Carp Lakes in the area?

Also, nearest TVR garage is Dulford near Cullompton (guy used to run well respected Penninsula garage). There are a few carp lakes about too.

I know nothing about thatched rooves mind, but it is very large and very green and moss covered. This may mean nothing of course.
Funny thing and why it took me a while to work out that it was in fact closed, the carvey lunch blackboard is still outside.
Some small signs have been pasted up in the window next to the door. If I get a chance I'll have a look and see what they say.

On a serious note, the situation of major A roads moving traffic away from the smaller roads has happened many times. There must be some regeneration plans that are tried and tested by brewers who retain their business by either diversifying or changing their business model.
yes indeed, although this property is not under any Brewery control, it does have plenty of potential and hopefully with a few 'outside the box' ideas this may have great potential.J500ANT said:
Just a thought, how big is the carpark? (ie any scope for "airport parking"?)
Not bad and garden is huge, so possible to extend carpark.... Google Map ImageEdited by pstruck on Thursday 7th January 15:59
Location shouldn't be a problem. Jack in the green at Rockbeare www.jackinthegreen.uk.com which is also on the old A30, albeit closer to Exeter is a fantastic place serving great food, and recently voted 'best restaurant in south west' by Taste of the West.
Living in East Devon, you get used to having to travel a little to find decent country pubs and restaurants, so another good one in the area would go down very well.

Conversely a friend of mine runs a similar size pub on the side of the A35 a bit further up in East Devon and is struggling to make ends meet despite serving good food and beer. The airport parking and/or accommodation might well be a go'er and if it's go no brewery tie then it's a better prospect that some.
