av. speed cameras m4 j18-19
Discussion
Just a heads up - there are now average speed cameras on the roadworks between junctions 18 and 19 - both directions. I only travel that way in the dark now so I can't be sure they aren't just covering the motorway maintenance blokes within the roadworks.
There are no speed camera signs, reduced speed limits in force, or other signs to tell us if they are active or not. At least one camera is hidden behind a message board and they're using floodlights next to another camera on the Bristol bound side. - whether that is related to the camera or the roadworks I don't know, but it must be a pain in the arse for people driving into those lights.

I think these are a hangover from the roadworks earlier this year, there is another set on the M5 where the roadworks were recently - roadworks have all gone but the scamera's are still there. I don't believe its possible to issue a fpn from a speed camera unless there are the scamera warning signs.
At least I hope they are a hangover from the roadworks as I have just passed them....................

Hey,
I do that route every week day, and just noticed them this morning, although I was away mon and tues. I think they went up on Tuesday night. As you say, I believe that they have to have warning signs etc if they are to use operational Av. Speed Cameras.
I've had a look on the highways agency website and it looks like this stretch of the m4 is going to get dug up for the next few months - the central reservation is going to have the metal fence replaced with a concrete wall. I think they are getting the hard shoulder ready for heavy use.
I expect these cameras to go live soon. Although I note they've left a load on the M5 just south of the almondsbury interchange. The sensors are covered but there are no 'camera not in use' signs....scare tactics?.

I am commuting from Reading-ish to Torquay and back every week, I am doing circa 200 miles each way which up until a couple of weeks ago had about 40 miles of roadworks - was just getting used to a decent run there and back and you lot ruin my weekend by letting me know that there is more to come.......

I'm confused by the introduction of these concrete walls as barriers. Are they supposed to be safer?
Apparently, yes.Perceived wisdom appears to be that these things are never hit head on at speed - there is always a degree of angle involved.
Therefore, so peceived wisdom goes, there is no chance of a vehicle penetrating the concrete barrier (as there is with the metal or wire ones) and fouling the opposite carriageway.

If you use the motorway East of Swindon you'll see what they are going to put up. It seems that the main advantage is that it will only close one carriageway in an accident. I bet this would cause more damage on that one carriageway as the concrete bounces the vehicle back into the road.
Anyway - there are signs up saying 4th Jan is the first day for roadworks kickoff for about 3 months. Yay.

Yeah, the M4 ones are still not working.
Someone mentioned the M5 above, so thought I'd mention it.
Between 17 and 16 on the M5 there are average speed cameras, only on the north bound side.
I only use the M5 to get on to the M4, so there might be more on the M5, but I just noticed those on the way in to work this morning.
