After talking to Dave, Chimtvr about a trip to Nurburgring I was wondering if any of the South west lot
would be interested in a European trip??
Me personally would like to go to Monte Carlo but thought we could do a tour and you could join up for the parts you wanted or leave early to help with the costs. So if your interested in the idea or have any suggestion of places to see or routes to take please put them in here and we'll see if we can organise something.

Hmm now then, a Pistonheads Tour... idea

Midweek Track Day in South East England - June 9th
Dover to LeMans beer from 10th June (Race is 12/13th June!)
Head south east into Italy and take in the Italian Job roads driving, and a visit to Modena perhaps
Back through Austria (nice mountains), Czech Reb
And back through Germany (A1 Autobahn yikes)and the Nurbergring

Theres a few miles there. . . Been wanting to do something like that for years now...

Definitely be interested. cloud9

Well as I was going to do something along these lines next summer (after getting the road trip bug after my Nurburgring trip this year) when I get my new toy, I'd say I'm definately in smile

Been looking at the map and thinking of something like;
UK - Calais - then through Belgium into Germany and onto Nurburgring - South through Germany
taking in as much Autobahn as possible;) - through Switzerland - Stelvio pass? into Italy - get onto the coast road back towards
Monaco then through France home.
Any thoughts or places to visit along that rough path??
For those of you that are veterans of driving through Europe please give us your thoughts.

Dave, you have a basis of a good trip there, just one suggestion. Do it in reverse, ie Nurburg last. That way if anyone has a porblem with their car at the Ring they haven't lost the majority of their holiday.

Would love to do it again, but it would have to be in something more exciting than a 2.0 Focus lol.

I can confirm that this is a damn good idea, due to the fact that when I went to the ring it was going to be a week long trip inc going to the Swiss Alps. However on lap 2 of the first day at the 'ring, my mate blew his turbo and the breakdown insurers gave him an Opel/Vauxhall Meriva with a lawnmower engine in it (hardly a car to complete the trip in), so we ended up cutting the trip short, so the ring last is a good plan, that place is sooooo hard on the car that its just too risky to make it the first stop. Oh and if your car does break down, it can take up to 1 month to get it back, this is because, at least in the case of RAC european cover, they wait until they have enough stuffed cars to load up a transporter and bring them all back in one go, and unfortunately the last load had left the previous day meaning he had no car for 35 days and then of course had to get it fixed when it did come back. However we did learn that European breakdown cover is absolutely vital, they gave him a car to get to calais and then one to get back home from dover, got him an earlier ferry, and paid for a hotel for the night in calais, all for £40ish. Oh and its also worth getting ADAC (the german breakdown company) cover because then if you breakdown on track you don't have to pay the £250 it cost my buddy to, to get his car towed off the track.....

A slightly OT question but related:

How do you become part of the "SouthWest PH Crew"?

I am in. Let that be known across the land.

European tour is a great idea, but, as I have a modest income compared to some, I'm hoping we can keep the accommodation a little humbler than the majority of tours which seem to favour chateaux and 5 star residences.

Me and SWMBO were thinking about doing the Ring in 2010 so I'd be interested.

Saying that I would like to stay somewhere nice in Monaco but that's more for the missusrolleyes

dave definitely up for something like this. We do big road trips each year to Europe the last one ending at the Stelvio pass. Few of the guys on the monaro forum are on about doing a road trip to Romania - if you get something planned keep me in the loop if possible as I'd def be up for something (though baby on the way might be told no!)

I would love to go Dave but with me it's never simple.
If you are combining a Le mans trip I'm already booked in with camping and ferrys for my camper and despite the 7.5 litre engine I really don't fancy the ring trip in it!
I'm absolutely up for a seperate road trip in the vette! I'm not sure I will be in for the entire road trip as my wife is a school teacher and can't do this sort of thing in term time!
If I go to monaco without her I'm a dead man
