They were doing a road survey/census in the south glos area on the way to work for me and lots of others this morning, causing absolute fking mayhem.
What the hell for? Surely they who were doing the survey the council or whoever already know that the road system is chock a block every morning and evening.

You do know you don't have to answer any questions, don't you...?

They did this near Manchester Airport recently.

07.30 hours, causing a one hour queue. Wonder how many people missed their flights?

I tried to refuse once because i was in a hurry and the copper that was pulling random folk in got arsey when i told him politely that i needed to carry on, the officious little st made me join the back of the queue of others that were pulled in, wait until they had been questioned and tell the census taker that i did not have time to be questioned, it took 10 mins.

Now i will not EVER do ANY census ever, even if i have all the time in the world.

I dont really know much about census and how they work...if the police are there pulling you in to answer the census, does that mean it's a legal requirement in some way?

They were on the A38 at Filton stopping traffic heading towards Bristol. They were stopping people opposite the runway & the tail backs were up on the fly over.

Glad I was heading the other way. As for refusing to give any info, I wouldn't mind if they asked me anything, as long as your not in a rush then they can bleat on to me all they like, if your are in a rush, well you have to que up anyway! smile

When I got stopped in one of these on the A369 in Portishead in the morning rush hour they asked where I was headed and coming from and how frequently I made the journey. Nothing about how much I earned.

From the questions posed I assumed it was to do with traffic flow relating to the motorway junction.

I was waiting for a thread about this. I'm going to annoy everyone and admit that I was involved in this. Before anyone abuses me I just get paid to go where I'm told so don't shoot the messenger basically.
The purpose of the survey is officially to gather information on traffic numbers, destinations etc which will be used in a traffic managment computer model used by a consultancy firm on behalf of the council. The council were aware that the survey was going to cause chaos and we were expecting it. The problem is that in order to gather accurate information traffic from various times (including rush hour) and locations have to be sampled.
A final point worth mentioning is that apparantly (although don't quote me on this) an up to date traffic management model and the data it requires is also a requirement by the department of transport in order to obtain funding.
By the way I think today was the last day unless the responses are poor so we should be leaving you all alone from now on!
Please no abuse I've had enough of that on the roadside!

They'd better pay you well for doing that job biggrin

Is there any reason they can't put the survey online?

Was this so they can plan how to disrupt and hinder the road network in some new and devious way ?

You know, to get us all to travel 5 miles less and use a bus/bike/pogo stick to get to where we need to go.

Why not ANPR the cars then write or email the registered keepers to ask the same or even more detailed questions. Or am I being daft.

So survey/census done, where have you come from? where are you going? how often? Did you have sugar on your cereal this morning? etc etc.
Nobody has to stand there and ask questions to get an idea of how clogged the roads are.(Just look). The trouble is companies/offices/housing etc are built and being built, which is good news for the local area, but thats it, no new road structures/networks just all pile onto the existing roads, oh apart from what a waste of time and money bus lanes, which cause even more delays on the roads when building.
So now what after the results? flyovers, flying cars or maybe a Metro system even. Ummmmm now theres an idea.

Surely traffic management surveys are today undertaken by video cameras, the same recording and working alongside vehicle count equipment. Next time you drive home to Yate along the B4058 Iron Acton Bypass, at the two sets of traffic lights in the village, look up to your right, and there at each set of traffic lights you have the above cameras.

Took me 45 minutes to travel 3.2 miles on Tuesday and EVERY route out of Bradley Stoke was blocked by the census so they had a captive audience - I travel before the traffic as well but a colleague took 1hr 20 minutes to do the same journey slightly later - perhaps one question should be:

So how much have we cost you in lost wages today for being late for work? Here's the compensatory cheque!!!!!

It took me an hour and a quarter to get into my collection point at Filton for a job to Manchester. It normally takes 15 minutes top. Losing that hour meant I was then in a tailback returning on the M5 later on. A crash had closed 2 lanes and caused mayhem around Worcester.

So the census cost me over two hours in travel time which meant I could only do the one job all day (back home after 5pm as opposed to at base by 3pm). Add the fuel wasted inching along and it cost me at least £50.

Where do I send the bill?
