Rare that the Evening Post actually runs a sensible story, but this looks like one. Someone in the council is obviously getting bungs from a traffic lights manufacturer.

Hope something changes for the better in this st city!

Bristol has been shafted by useless lights - everyone can see it clearly - journeys across Bristol can be made easier and much much quicker with them turned off.

Drivers use common sense to negoiate roundabouts and turnings etc making everything safer, and you find that less cars sat idling means its also kinder to the environment.

Great idea by the Post.

This is not just a problem in Bristol - there is an insidious "march" of new traffic lights all over the country.

What many people don't realise - especially in Highways departments because they don't want to realise it - is that traffic lights generally cause more congestion than they solve.

Once each and every set of lights has been installed they become a liability to the local Council Tax payer. The cost of installation, electricity to run the things (no matter how many low energy bulbs are used, they still use the juice in perpetuity) and the cost of maintenance.

Also don't forget the pollution coming from vehicles which are stationary for no better reason than there is a red light in front of them.

Each and every installation does its bit towards global warming.

And the local authorities most enthusiastic in introducing them are those who most want to save the planet (liberals, sandalistas etc) scratchchin

It would be laughable if it wasn't so short sighted

I live in Portishead and the traffic really is easier now they've removed the Cabstand lights...fingers crossed they remove the other set too.

I think BCC should really consider turning off some of the lights around Bristol, even if they run it as a trail as they have done here...would certianly cut down on rush hour traffic

The article says the council is looking at making "the whole of Portishead traffic light free." I'm struggling to think of any other lights apart from for pedestrian crossings.

I feel like I'm taking my life into my hands negotiating Cabstand these days, there is no indication of right of way and people randomly stop while heading in a straight line to let people out from side roads - very noble but when you're not expecting the person in front of you to stop when the road is clear a bit alarming.

They said they are going to update the road markings on the cabstand to make it clear who has right of way and they will install zebra crossing for the pedestrians.

The other lights they're talking about are the ones at the Co-op...theres talk of a roundabout going in

Lights in Avonmouth were out recently, not a traffic queue in sight and everyone kept moving. Saved me time, fuel, and reduced pollution.

Now then, if only they'd break the ones at Cribbs Causeway we'll be well away.
