Devon Impreza 'Handyman'??
Discussion
Hi, I'm an ex Newton Abbotonian living in the South East. I have a classic Impreza in a garage near Newton that's in need of some work: new head gasket (I have the metal gasket set), the brakes probably need sorting out as the car has been standing for a while and ideally I probably need the paintwork tidying up. The car has a large front mounted intercooler, the 2.5 block and various other performance bits. If I give it to a garage and pay garage rates the work to get this back on the road will probably cost a small ish fortune (engine out etc), and, when I have the finances I will whip the engine out again to put in uprated bearings and pistons/conrods. What I'm looking for is someone who can carry out the work on my car, slowly, cheaply and for a cash supplement to perhaps their retirement rather than as a purely money making, get it in and out of the workshop exercise. I'll pay decent rates but just not garage rates ideally if someone was to take this on as a project for some extra money on the side. It could take 6 months to complete, I'm not bothered. If the labour wasn't expensive I'd probably get the engine internals done at the same time. Anyone know anyone who'd like to make some cash carrying out this work?
The only person I know of locally to you is AP Motors.
But as you said- would probably charge a small fortune.
With regards to your timescale- It's a family owned affair, so why not ask the owner what he could do for you?
Other than that, why not ask the local college- if they have a motor dept. that could be interested in doing it?
I know when I was doing my apprenticeship they would take on jobs.
Worth a shout maybe
If you're still stuck, why not buy a workshop manual (plus a haynes) & try it yourself?
It's not rocket science, plus, a good excuse to get out of the housework
ETA- probably better off asking on South West Scoobies website.

Hi there,
I would be happy for this to be a part time/quiet time job in our workshop if there is no time pressure.
The lads can work on it out of hours/weekends - and we have our own paintshop so can sort the bodywork too.
Obviously would need to sort out exact scope of work/timeframe with you but we have lots of very secure (indoor) storage and we have done projects this way for people in the past. Keeps it all in one place.
PM me if this might be of interest.
Cheers,
Neil.

I certainly wouldn't use AP Motors, Andy at Alan Jeffery's is the main man for an Impreza build but he has rebuilds coming out of his ears so a cheap job isn't on the cards.
What's wrong with APM? Genuinely interested PM me if it breaks the T&C's
