Cheddar II - Driving Gods, or attention seeking fools?
Discussion
I'd love to start this as a poll, but I don't have the ability.
Sunday was great, The wife and I enjoyed ourselves muchly.
I'm curious to know the mood of the masses though. There were a few drivers trying to show off.
We spotted a black corvette trying to take off quickly in the gorge, and just creating tyre smoke and going sideways. There was a gold S2000 driving up and down repeatedly, making lots of noise, but not much progress. Finally, we saw a silver M3 briefly tail slide on a mini roundabout in the centre of Cheddar.
All of which I find a bit pathetic and pointless. I'm all for a blast from A-B on the windies, that requires some driver skill and is what our cars were built for, but all wheel spinning does is make people look and think "knob cheese".
What do others who attended think? Are these people the driving gods that they clearly think they are, or are they simply idiots trying to look cool?

As the guilty party let me apologise i did not intend to offend anybody.
I do not consider myself a driving god but will add i had fitted those tyres purely to destroy over the weekend as they are so rubbish. When iI am using my better tyres I'm much better behaved
Consider me chastised

This post does not help chances of future meets
If you have issues, point it pout to those concerned via PM?
Not sure I agree with that Matt. If I'm in a significant minority, then I'll put up and shut up. I don't feel that such behaviour is responsible or acceptable. I don't wish to be associated with it. If the majority here feel that such driving is OK, then I happily won't attend any more meets like this.If you have issues, point it pout to those concerned via PM?
If the majority here feel as I do, then an open forum is a very good place to make those views known. Hopefully the attention seeking minority will take note.
The instances I mentioned above did happen. I'm sure they were not the only instances, just the stuff that I witnessed. Like it or not, they are as much a part of the event as the great display of cars, conversation and camaraderie that made the event such fun. I'm not a fan of censoring the truth. Personally I think that talking about the negatives with a mind to resolving any differences is good way of improving future meets.
I've made my views clear, I'd love to hear those of others!
You did a cracking job organising this meet by the way. Overall we really enjoyed the meet.
I don't see it as that much of a problem TBH, it's just a bit of fun for all involved plus, don't forget the money raised for charity by the event.
Someone at somepoint will think you're a cock regardless of what you do in life -because they choose to live their life differently, so why not?
You can't please everyone afterall.
By my estimation, more people were interested than annoyed with the event- lots of people stopping off to talk & take pictures on the way to, during & from the event.
Mike, I have a sneaky suspision you were rock climbing on the other side of the Gorge

The idiot in the Corvette is definately a Knob cheese
Nah the bloke in the Ferrari 348 was alot worse....I will now put my opinion on the original OP
I can't see that much of a problem if it's done in a controlled environment. I can't comment on the Honda or M3 as I didn't see those, however the said Corvette (which I agree the driver is a knob cheese) may have revved his engine and wheel span but the time I saw it wasn't endangering anybody and didn't seem to drive excessively fast. Also I would like to point out that he was encouraged to do so by members who had heard of the said car and wanted to witness it.
I have now been on a few events and please don’t let that little part put you off. They are a great bunch of people and the cars are fantastic. Alternatively you can always attend the likes of Wilton Park which are on grounds where none of that can happen.
Hope you continue to join us
Steve

Mike can i point you to the above reply
Thanks Chim, I'm afraid your original post was a bit too subtle for me. The edited version is much clearer! Apart from a very few people here, I've not made the conection between username and metal work! I recognise your decency & guts in offering the apology and accept. I'm really not after apologies though, you don't owe anyone that. I'm also not trying to chastise (but it'd be damn difficult to start this thread without describing the instance that made me want to post!)
If people want and expect that stuff from a meet, then thats fine. I don't want to stand in your way, but neither do I want to be associated.
Perhaps I'm posting through a haze of red mist. A better question might have been "Appropriate for a piston heads meet, or not?"
Mike strangely enough i tried to find you on the day to warn you (i also hadn't put the car and owner together) your front tyres are on the wrong sides check the direction arrows on the side the left one should be on the right. It dangerous in the wet as your tyres will fill themselves ith water rather than dry the road
My take on this is:
Cheddar has always been the informal, noisy meet as befits the location. This has been so for the 3 years I've been to it. As sportscars are generally loud and sound good, there is a natural excitement at seeing how they sound in what is an amphitheatre, howls and burbles reverberating off the sheer rock faces.
Traditionally, the exit of the cars from the gorge onward to a pub was subject to much more wheelspinning by most cars as they joined the road (and some doughnuts in the car park) which was actually absent this time as far as I'm aware.
Part of the attraction for me is the 'show' of various cars progressing up the gorge, hearing whatever it might be under load and the drama of a quick car in a fabulous setting. Duesey's XK140 heading up the hill quickly in April sticks in my mind for its evocative romance, or ZS's loud Viper filling the gorge with sound. I actually wish more would show their cars like this - within reason - as cars are meant to move. Parking up to look at the cars is very pleasant and educational, but seeing someone enjoying their pride and joy up a twisty road is exciting, as long as they don't take it too far.
My experience of PHers is that they know there is a time and a place; I have been to many meets, and organised a couple, and I've never seen an unsafe manoeuvre. I'd be the first to condemn anyone endangering others or their cars, but I've luckily never had to do that. I saw Dave fling the Vette out of the car park and never thought "what a tt" because I could clearly see that no traffic was around, and no pedestrians could get hurt. I don't doubt that Dave had considered these things beforehand.
Showing off a little bit is part and parcel of owning a great car. There's a reason why Top Gear is so popular - they show exotic machinery doing what shopping trolleys cannot do; something removed from our everyday life.

I found this bloke amazingly annoying. Must have driven up and down, screaming the engine every time, about 40 times. No idea why he was doing it but his username on here did go some way to clearing up why.Edited by SirClarke on Wednesday 9th September 14:54

I did enjoy the event though, especially and finally at long last hearing Foundy's exhaust (amazing) even though he did follow me back from the Salisbury event a few weeks ago. It's nice to know Dave's Aston is louder than my Tamora. You can never beat the sound of a V8.
Most enjoyable event.
