Ladies and gentlemen of the South West, I come to you from the Thames Valley forum in search of that rarest of rare thing. Local knowledge.

I'm heading down to Hamburger Hill for some paintball action on my stag do and then heading out for a night with about 10 other guys. I'm just not sure what is the better option for a night out, I've been told Bath, but the hotels look a lot more expensive over there.

My advice, for what it's worth...

Find a cheap hotel in town if you can, and head up Park Street, on to the Triangle or Whiteladies Road. Plenty of reasonably priced B&B's near the Downs, eg...

http://www.bedandbreakfastsearcher.co.uk/detail.as...
http://www.downsedge.com/index.html

From these you can head down Black Boy Hill and onto Whiteladies Road, many many pubs, bars and eateries to choose from. It does depend on what kind of night you're after though ??

I'm not quite sure what we are after to be honest, just something informal and not too young and 'townie'.

Then GavGav gives good advice, the centre of Bristol, especially the harbourside, is too young and townie, but the Park Street up to Whitladies Road area will be fine, good choice of bars and places to eat. Will be much quieter at the moment as the students aren't around. I only live a couple of miles from Hamburger Hill and didn't even realise it was there until I drove past it yesterday.

Thirded.

Nice as Bath is, you'll probably have an easier and cheaper time in the right parts of Bristol.

Once again I find myself agreeing with GavGav.

Cheesy dance at La Rocca on the Triangle is a giggle. Quieter drinks at Channings Hotel and into Clifton village, more lively on Park St and Whiteladies.

Great ales at Jersey Lily (top of Whiteladies Rd) and Port of Call (again at the top but up a side street).

As has been said, stay away from the centre of Brissle. The terrace of the White Lion is great if the weather's good. Avoid the food though.

Would the Novotel on Victoria Street be a decent place to stay for the night?

I went up for a birthday a little while ago and we all stayed at the Premier Inn - Central. (Think its the haymarket one). Massive building and central location - you can see it from miles around so even when you can't see your hands in front of you after a night out, easy to navigate home!!!

Hmm, im tempted to apply for bar work there. Might be interesting part time work for awhile.
