Apparently the M5 is shut between WSM and BoS southbound and only one lane open northbound due to a fatal accident. So anyone heading that way tonight would be well advised to give the area a wide berth.

+1
currently sat on the hard shoulder southbound, facing northbound (we were told to turn around after they shut the entire stretch). Avoid if possible, I can see the junction but it's not got any closer in the last hour...

Car lost control, left motorway and burst into flames. One died in the fire, one taken to Frenchay.

Seems an excessive amount of closure (all South and only 1 lane open North) for such an incident.

It's a fatal, is that not serious enough to warrant investigation? You know, like why did the car leave the carriageway? What did it hit first and why?

Police had Northbound fully open once helicopter gone, and most of Southbound too.

I'm sure the families of the victims will agree with you.

Sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture.

I'm sure Johnny Foreigner only cones off a short section of motorway for such incidents.

Mind you, they also put up screens to stop rubber-necking cockspanners causing further incidents.

I would think that how much or little of the M5 is closed will not matter one little bit to them.

Sometimes people should wind their neck in when someone gets killed or seriously injured.

Any loss of life is sad but it is increasingly the case that motorways stay shut for sometimes the whole day even when it is not a fatalaty just in case.
Once the team is there just how long does it take to map the scene? The only reason is because we are not allowed to have accidents now as someone needs to be blamed.
I am not unsympathetic but there needs to be a degree of reality especially when the roads in question are the main arterial network

The recent closure of the M4 was a case in point. However, knowing someone who was involved in the carnage I can understand why it took so long. The yellow markings are a mass of dots and lines where it must have taken a considerable time to map out. The debris was strewn over a considerable distance too.

Not all crashes result in long closures. However as you say in the current day blame culture every detail must be known, as much for the protection of the innocent as prosecution of the guilty.

The picture from yesterday shows the shroud covering the car on the hard shoulder. Not very far off the carriageway at all really so I can see why two lanes remained closed for a fair while.

Yes it's sad but perhaps it's about time we had crack teams of accident investigators who are rehearsed in this kind of thing? Sadly, fatal motorway accidents seem to be a regular occurrence, so a team who are well practiced in getting all the required information quickly, would surely be a good idea?

At the moment, it seems to take a very long time to get the motorways open again after these kinds of accidents.

Do you mean the accident investigation officers perchance? They already exist.

It's a tough call, and I don't deny that I would want all the answers if it was someone dear to me who had been killed, but the typical disruption caused is out all proportion. And further, there are often other accidents in traffic queues and on diversion routes.

My house looks down into the valley. Was very bizarre to see cars on the hard shoulder going the wrong way up the motorway. Seen a lot of things on that mway over the years but never that!

May they RIP.

Is Frenchay the major hospital round about here then? Ive only just moved over to Bristol (near enough Frenchay actually) and have no idea.
