My brother was at the avon gorge hotel on Friday and said that a whacking great military aircraft, probably a nimrod was flying very low in the gorge, and went up & over the suspension bridge before flying off....has anyone here heard of this happening?! if so - is it a regular thing? I think it'd be pretty cool to see

If it's a whacking great military plain that neck of the woods it is more than likely a Galaxy Transporter out of Lynham.

The RAF don't have Galaxies but they do have C17 Globemasters and they are based at Brize Norton. Lyneham have C130 Hercules.
Edited to add: Sorry for being such a pedant wink

Thanks for the correction, but I can assure you they are constantly up at Lynham, bringing back the dead.

C-17 wink

C130's are based at Lyneham.

C-17's are used to repatriate fallen UK Forces personnel- usually.

Gratuitous shot- i'm middle row second from right.

I believe there are a couple of movers in the SW forum- anyone recognise the MAMS team?

ERK

C5 Galaxy

C-17 Globemaster

I was lucky enough to do an Air Lift competition (Ex. Rodeo) with the RAF- held at McChord AFB in Seattle.
Where the USAF have a big fleet of C5's & C17's.

Both are fantastic bits of kit, but the C5 is alot bigger. Was great to see them being thrown around.

Yep, they are C-17 Globemasters not Galaxies, I am sure Eric will be along shortly to tell us all the differences between the two. wink

It was a C130 Hercules; it passed my window by about 30ft (just before it got to the Avon Gorge hotel). It was at most 90 deg bank flying between the towers of the bridge.

I made a post about in in planes, boats etc.

wavey Mover right here..........unfortunetly i'm at work at Brize at the moment and the computer won't let me see the pictures. But once I get back in the house i'm sure i'll recognise some of the muppets in the photo. I'm sure Dave will be along shortly too (also a muppet! hehe)

Definetley sounds like a Herc that flew through the gorge, they like that sort of thing....hard to imagine a nimrod doing low level flying......that defeats the object of why we have them!! (high level reconissance flying wink)
