I've got to drive from Lancashire to Cornwall on Monday and fancy stopping around Weston-Super-Mare. ('cos I've never been!). If any PHer down that way could recommend a pub that does a decent but not too pricey lunch I'd be very grateful.

A jolly decent PHer owns The Alasia cafe/restaurant. Excuse the web site, it's not one of mine wink

I ended up teaching myself SF, not up to your standards I'll happily confess! But it's helped to keep me busy.

Unfortunately we're closed on a Monday. I haven't eaten in too many pubs around Weston - the Nook and Harbour on Knightstone Road is quite good (on the seafront) so is the only one I can recommend. Angry Apples has better local knowledge, hopefully he'll be along soon to advise...

Oooh!

Can I play Michelin?

TBH, I struggle for decent food in Pubs around WSM as the majority are chains and hence by definition are crap!

However, I have always found the Woolpack at St Georges to produce very decent food, with a good choice so long as you bear in mind we are talking pub lunch! - added bonus that you barely have to leave the Motorway to get to it:

If you want the sea front view (considering the forecast, I doubt it!) you could try stopping off 1 junction earlier at Clevedon and go to the Little Harp which is right on the sea front and again seems to have a good menu and well cooked food

Hope that helps mate, sorry there isnt much choice

When he IS open, I heartily recommend Gav's place!

...if you can get served. We sat in there and waited 45 minutes, only for the waitress to tell us they were very busy and it would be another 45 minutes before she could take our order. We left.

Are you sure you are talking about the right place?

They only take orders at the food counter in there, not via a waitress (its a pub, not restaurant after all?) never been able to give orders to a waitress in all the years i've gone there (quite a few!)

That said, I'd never wait 45 minutes to give an order (readyaimfire! ;-) - 15 would be pushing it, BIG time

Didn't realise The Alasia had a PH connection - I've heard good things, we'll be in soon for dinner.

Like Apples says, there aren't that many decent pubs for food in Weston. The Woodborough Inn does pretty good food, which is just outside Weston in Winsombe.

The Oak and Glass do very good food, but it's a restaurant not a pub and is a bit more expensive as a result.

2nd the Oak and Glaas

Only places worth eating in WSM:

Alasia

Oak and Glass

Duets (opposite the Windsor pub top of Baytree)

Possibly - flute de Paris (Oxford street)

Yet to try Reflections (Bouelvard) since the new owner took over a few years back - anyone got feedback?

I've been to Reflections many times - it's very nice, I should have mentioned it in my first post.

Dimitri's in Uphill is pretty good as well.

This is turning into a "Somerset Eateries" thread...

Thanks Matt - we aim to please. How was Torquay ?

We really want to eat at Oak and Glass, but obviously timing is an issue as they seem to be open when we are ?! Have heard nothing but good things about the place, excellent reputation. Not eaten at Reflections since new ownership so can't comment (Paul and Leslie that used to own it now have the Food Den on West street, great food to take home and eat, jolly nice couple too)

Our chef talks highly of Mask of Venice if you fancy Italian, and Hussain's if you're after an Indian meal.

Obviously not Thursday, Friday or Saturday night...

+1 on both!

The lamb on the A38 in Weare does excellent pub food as well and handy for people "passing through" as it were.

The new Italian thats opened just across from the library in WSM is great as well, staff are fantastic and a good buzz to the place veen when fairly quiet, can't remember the name of the damn place though!

That will be the "B" word. Have been there once, never again, really poor.

So where did the OP end up going on Monday ?

Would 2nd that, very nice food and great service (forgot all about them!)

Not as good as Gav's place though, of course ;-)

Well,

just had to post this

Ended up going to the Cove (Set in Knightstone Marina WSM for those that dont know it) as 4 friends from our road invited us along

There was a set menu on for a "French Evening"

Its a long time since i've been quite so dissapointed by a meal, and all the more so for the fact the place always seemed to have a good reputation

The menu offered two choices for the main course, moules or rump steak, as neither Jane or I "do seafood" it was the rump steak

Steak was in both cases cooked rare (at our request) and was awful, so tough you just could not eat it

Veg wise you were given a dauphinoise tower and onion relish, with not even the option to purchase extra vegetables (the wife heard a lady in the loos complaining about this)

So, nobody came and asked "is everything ok with your meal?"

And then when the waitress came to collect I was given the distinct impression had I not raised the issue the plates with 70-80% of the steak left on them would have been whisked away without a word

So, brought up the poor quality, and I was told they would raise the issue with the chef

Nothing more heard

Then, its time for Desert - only one desert on offer (passion fruit creme brulee) and the wife is looking forward to this after the naff steak

In true Fawlty towers style, there was a problem - they were very sorry but they had run out of the desert, would we like some white chocolate thing instead (wife hates white choc!)

So, I question how they could run out when it was a set menu with 1 desert

Answer - they had 30 bookings, and made that plus some extras but unforutantely they ha given out more brulee than expected to walk in diners

This really did it for me, as I stated surely the alternative desert should have been offered to the walk in's and the people that had booked in advance should get the brulee?

So, comes to paying and I'm determined I'm going to have my say, bill arives, no discount

Went up to the counter to pay and brought up the fact I felt they should discount based on the poor steak, but apparently the chef had said we should expect that from Rump!

I made the point we had been charged £17.50 for 2 courses, one of which (desert) was not what it should of been and one was poor quality, but apparently the fact the meal included a 1/2 carafe of cheap house wine made up for all that

All in all, absolutely disgusted and shall never darken their doors again

We almost went to the French night at The Cove, glad we didn't now. Personally haven't been there, but I hear mostly positives about the place. MOSTLY positives...

Croyde - there ARE good places to eat in W-S-M. You just have to look hard!

AA & Dobbo - any experience of the Captain's Cabin ? I know it's pub food, but any good ?
