Currently living in soulless housing estate in Swindon. Not worth the taxi fare into the centre, too far to walk to anything in the evenings.

Mrs is looking for a job in Bristol, and if she gets one I will follow suit. Have been looking at places to live.

Emmerson green looked ok until we realised it was another soulless housing estate, and probably still too far from the centre with not much going on. Drove round Redland / Bishopston area and would like to live there, perhaps somewhere near Gloucster road.

Would like to rent 2-3 bed place, would be nice to have a quick link to the M4 because to start will I'll be commuting to Swindon. We would like a garage if poss but realise this might be a sacrifice... need somewhere to keep a bike and any kit car plans would have to go on hold frown

What areas are best??

Cheers. Tim

Well of course it all depends on budget, but if u need to get anywhere in a hurry don't go central/south or west of centre.

EG is fine for Swindon....some may say it has the estate feel but u can do worse.

Personally I'd go for a more period place in/around Soundwell/Fishponds/Kingswood.

Good advice above, or look at Westybury on tryem/henleaze or just ourised...Clevedon or Nailsea areas.

Wouldn't recommend Nailsea/Clevedon if a Swindon commute is on the cards.

East Bristol (Kingswood, Speedwell etc) would be good if you need a garage, you'll get much more space for your £ compared to Central areas. Easier access to Swindon too. If you want walking distance of the centre though, give up the thought of a garage and you'll have SO much more choice. Really depends on your budget. £650 will get you a nice 2/3 bed place in East Bristol, or typically only a 1 bed place with on street parking somewhere like Clifton.

Might be worth waiting to see where the job(s) are located. Massive bonus if you can walk to work. Bristol occasionally has traffic "issues" and the public transport is expensive.

Bishopston is supposed to be a nice area, ex colleague of mine lives there and she said it was like a village in itself but not far from a great selection of shops, however traffic could be an issue (though traffic is an issue in most areas of Bristol!)

We live Whitchurch way, probably what could be classed as another souless estate (however I have made an effort to get to know some neighbours so not as bad as it could be) but has a good bus route straight into town. Carry on along the A37 and some good villagy type places, depends on your budget and again traffic into Bristol could be a problem.

There are some lovely properties on the harbour front, which is also a lovely area to walk around, but will be pricey.

For M4 access I guess Kingswood or Fishponds (good spots but look carefully around first) would be better

I used to commute daily from Bristol to Swindon. Living right on the docks is OK when you leave in the morning but is an utter git to get back to when you are coming back to the city.

As Becks said, Bishopston, St Andrews, Horfield are all good for getting on to the motorway in the morning and fairly painless to get back in the evening.

There are a few of us on here that live in that part of the world wink

Stoke Gifford, especially the old village is very nice, just a very short hop the the M4 too.

I'm in Horfield - check out lettings in Filton Park (Braemar Ave, Dunkeld etc) - lots with garages.

Easy to get to M32 / M4 / M5 etc and a short hop into town too.

Chipping sodbury / Yate is right on J18 (Tormarton) and you'll never see excess traffic, morning or evening.
It's around a 20min train ride into town (£4.00ish return) or a 25/30min drive in (+ parking - extortionate).

Sodbury is beautiful and very picturesque, Yate... less so but with some very nice areas. Decidedly nicer than Kingswood though! Sorry, I work just outside of Kingswood and it's not what you would call 'home of the beautiful people'. Plus, nights out involve chavs, fights, riots, police and cell-time.

It all depends on how dar out of town you want to live?

I'd say Sodbury's too far and a PITA from Bristol to commute happily - great for Swindon but a 'mare to/from Bristol if driving. While the town centre is picturesque and quaint most of the affordable properties are on "soulless estates" anyway. I like living there but don't think it's anything other than the outer 'burbs.
Good pubs and restaurants but no other night life - you'd have to get to Bath or Bristol for that. Good shops too - two excellent butchers, local grocer and baker as well as the other usual pap. Unfortunately for the local traders, good for the tossers; Waitrose is coming to town in a couple of years.
FFS! like I said above we already have excellent local shops & traders and so they're now going to try to kill them off with a fecking super--market.

waveyLive in St Andrews, and I used to live in, er, St Andrews. I liked it so much I only moved 500 yardsbiggrin. I've been quite fortunate :cough: and have 3 garages :cough: so they are about. It's a 20 minute walk into town but the pubs and shops locally are great. 20 minute cycle to Ashton Court and Leigh woods for the country and 5 mins from the M32..
