Just in case anyone was wondering where their Council tax was going:

Police Budget set for 2009/10
Thursday, 19 February 2009 13:31
Wiltshire Police Authority has today (19 February) set a budget of £105 million to maintain and improve the county's policing service.

It means from April the average council tax paying household will contribute an additional 14 pence a week for policing services over the next financial year.

The authority set the annual policing precept for 2009/10 at a meeting held at Police Headquarters in Devizes.

Members agreed a 4.99 per cent increase - equivalent to council tax payers with a band D property paying a new annual policing precept of £152.59 - a total of an additional £7.25 in 2009/10.

Police Authority Chairman Christopher Hoare said afterwards: 'We believe this is good value for money set against the Wiltshire Police commitment to making the county the safest in the country.

'The Police Authority is acutely aware of the need to contain costs in today's economic conditions after being given a government grant of 2.4 per cent, the joint lowest in the country.

'This budget allows Wiltshire Police to maintain front line policing levels and also secures the future of the Wiltshire Police Air Ambulance for a further five years."

Wiltshire Police Chief Constable Brian Moore said: 'This budget allows us to continue to improve your police service over the next year while building on the progress we made in 2008.

Mr Moore added: 'The past year has seen considerable improvements in our police service. Fewer crimes are being committed and our detection rates are rising. There are now more officers on the streets and they are better equipped.

'Our public tell us they are more satisfied with our service and more confident in the force to keep them safe.

'Neighbourhood policing teams are established around the county. We are planning to move forward by introducing the Policing Pledge this year, which sets out clearly what you can expect from your police service. This will include your neighbourhood officers spending even more time working on issues in your community.'

The budget allows Wiltshire Police to continue its performance drive.

In the next year Wiltshire Police will increase intelligence officers and custody staffing to process offenders more efficiently and add more force operations room inspectors to improve the supervision of police officers on the streets.

Further investment will be made in regional collaboration with other forces for protective services, to deal with serious and organised crime, counter terrorism issues, civil contingencies, strategic roads policing and critical incidents.

The budget also keeps the Wiltshire Police helicopter service flying for a further five years, a service which people around the county have said they value highly.

The Chief Constable concluded: 'I am committed to making Wiltshire the safest county in the country and this budget settlement is another step forward to achieving that goal.'
