Impressed, confused... I was both!

I've put this here purely because I suspect the geography will mean little to those outside the Bristol area, however may move it to P and P with an explanatory note...
I was cycling home from work today. At the traffic lights with Avon Street (Beside the Feeder Canal) a guy was pushing and steering a Mk5 Golf, away from Temple Meads down Feeder Road.
I stopped and asked him if he needed a hand, thinking he was pushing it to a slightly better location to summon help. He asked me where the Vauxhall garage was... I told him where on Avon Street, but exclaimed that it was rather a long way to push a car. I had my silly clipless pedal shoes on which are useless for walking any distance in.
He replied, "Oh, never mind- Cheers mate, I've pushed it from St. Mary Redcliffe already!"
WTF??? That's a bloody long way, not to mention the numerous large roundabouts and heavy traffic in the way.
Odd.
