Bristol Police Blitz on dodgy cars at Cribbs...
Discussion
Just had my first tug in the BMW - was nipping to ASDA for some shopping at lunchtime and was curious to see several Traffic cars parked up by the roundabout - in it seemed, ANPR mode - whereupon I rounded the corner to spot the ANPR van
Having nowt to worry about I was just pleased to see that it was out and about, however as I passed I noticed one of the Traffic cars nip out and decide to follow me into Asda whereupon I got the signal to pull over.
The nice lady officer asked me to follow them up to the far end of the Asda car park, whereupon an almighty operation was in full flow:
Lots of tents for vehicles to pull into, lots and lots of officers kicking about, and what seemed like most of Bristol's police cars! I was asked to pull into a tent and then taken through the usual documents questions and produce requests - and VOSA came and had a good sniff around the car.
It seemed that the 316i badge mystifed the original officer in the Traffic car and decided that was a good reason to pull me in, and it certainly foxed the VOSA chappy until I pointed it out to him that I'd re-badged it, explaining why. After a good chuckle all round, they carried out the remainder of their duties, and I had a good natter with (very good looking) female officer whilst waiting for the green light.
It was apparent from the officer that they were having a big weeklong operation to catch out all the dodgy cars and lorries, and so were pulling anything and everything in.
Upon leaving to smiles all round, I noticed, to my joy, a chav with an Escort with different colour bumpers, stereotypical reg no in the window etc getting a VERY hard time from some other officers - seems they're picking out anything off to try and clamp down...
Great stuff I say, and I made sure that I told the officers that I appreciate them doing the job to try and keep the illegal scum off the road, Cheers officers

Do you think a smaller than normal front plate would be spotted on the way past, or are they not that astute? I'm asking because a friend of mine has as good as no front plate but has never had any hassle in the year he has had his car.
Will be tugged for it and given a bking I expect, as long as he's polite and friendly. If he's arsey he'll get a 30 quid standard fine for that offence (not yet endorsable unfortunatly).
Tell him to get a numberplate fitted like everyone else has to, and then he won't have to worry.
Drives me mad - only MX5's, E-Types and Caterham/Westfields can carry off smaller/bonnet numberplates, everything else trying just looks stupid.

I'm glad this is happening too...(it did send me out to check my rear tyres though!).
I'd like to see this happen during the summer and the Bib stop all the tossers with bikes on the back of their cars obscuring their numberplates and lights. I see loads of them but I've never seen one tugged for it.

I beg to disagree good sir, lots of cars in other countries such as the USA aren't required to have a front plate and I think they look much better. Especially the super cars like Ferrari's and such. Why have so many of you got this big downer on people with no/small/dodgy front plates?
I agree with whatnot above, they totally muck up the front of many cars and furthermore in many cases they cock up the airflow, degrading fuel economy. As someone with a deep moral objection to burning fossil fuels, I find this objectionable.
Also some of us with imported economy cars find it very difficult to make those hulking great big UK spec plates fit properly.

If your mate owns a Ferrari, then fine, however he doesn't so tell him to sort out a proper numberplate before a pissed off copper decides to waste an hour of his time pulling his car apart and fining him £30 for the pleasure.

True mate, but then again you've some interesting kit that deserves showing off. The clapped out red Escrot that I saw with a white primered bumper and reg no: in the windscreen is NOT one that can pull it off.I agree with whatnot above, they totally muck up the front of many cars and furthermore in many cases they cock up the airflow, degrading fuel economy. I'd love to run the BMW without a front plate, I'm sure it'd look much nicer, but seeing as its the law, and everyone else runs one, its fair to expect others to try and fit it at least.
Its a crap argument that'll go round and round, I fully appreciate the the point of view, but then I could say the same thing about an MOT - my BMW is super reliable and in great machanical condition - so why do I bother taking an MOT? Surely theres no point.
However we do it cos its the law and we'd prefer an easier life than being given a dressing down by the plod, and that was my point in the first place - everyones entitled to do what they like, but don't blame the plod when they poke you in the eye for not adhering to the regulations...

I don't think he thinks he's cooler for it, I think he just thinks the car looks allot better, and shootings a tad harsh isn't it?! willd58 said:
