A moment of madness has given me a new toy to re-build over the winter...

A replica of a Porsche 550 Spyder... It was a very impulsive purchase so there'll be plenty of time for regrets later!!!
It's meant to be a James Dean version apparently (I'm not sure - it's all before my time)...

Examples of what it 'could' look like when it's done.

Youtube suggests it needs an Impreza engine, but I think I'll concentrate on the basics first!!!

Fab cars, always liked these but the originals are a bit pricey!
Do you know which kit it is? Banham do one (apparently not great - beetle based) and so do a co at Thruxton (rather better). I thought they were supposed to run alfa or skoda engines - apart from the beetle ones.
Look forward to seeing the after pics.

Cool, at the moment I think its got a 1.3 skoda engine in it :fingers-crossed:
I'd better do some more research... Anyone know of suitable forums for this type of thing?

Nice Graham. My brother used to have a skoda 1.3 Rapid so probably the same engine. You can really tune that engine to give about 120+ bhp quite easily I believe...

wow i am very jealous. paul banham did a lot of the 550 kits so he might be a point of call for some questions but i think the company ceased to be a few years ago. if i remember, the skoda engine is good for about 80 bhp if a few go faster bits are sourced, should be plenty enough for a good thrill. keep updating us with some pics...

I had one too. The 1.3 can be mildly tuned (from IIRC 70ish BHP) but for 120+ you need a fiat twin cam which is a relatively straightforward swap AFAIK.

I'm now pretty sure it is a Banham one using a skoda floor pan, running gear and engine.
I'll update periodically with piccy's - Not planning on hanging around!
Engine is now running...

I can't wait to get to the painting stage.

Nice one, good luck with the build.

He's a snap of me caught sniffing round a couple up at Gaydon last month. Both very nice examples:

They are very cool cars. I've always thought to myself that if I had the opportunity to build a kit it would be one of these.
Must go back to my mantra - already got too many cars......
