Looks like 4 months of roadworks starting next month have prompted the erection of Specs scameras furious

This is bringing back horrible memories of 10 years ago banghead

4 months? Yeah right. Anyone opening a book on how long they screw up the traffic flow for?

Saw these on the way home. Great. I guess they need a little more cash to supplement the total fk up they made last time.

I'm betting on at least a year this time.....

Any know what they're planning on doing?

Apparently this phase for 4-5months is only southbound when that's finished the start on the northbound so you guess of a year is probably not far off the mark

Having driven the bridge for the first time a few months back, i'm amazed it's not a 50 limit already really. The curve of the surface is so steep that you can barely see your stopping distance at 70+. The same with the new bridge on the A417 just off the M4 at swindon, really crap design and i'm amazed tehre aren't huge pileups on these more often.

Sorry but that's rubbish (unless you have a VERY low car and are trying to spot another VERY low car on the horizon)! It's perfectly safe to cross the Avonmouth bridge at the normal motorway speed limit of 70mph and be able to see your braking distance just fine. I've been doing it for years without issue.

To be honest, I'm not really fussed about the SPECs, it's more the reduction to 3 lanes and the inevitable congestion it'll cause frown

I agree with this, having been driving the M27 twice a week during the last 9 months of roadworks with SPECS and the average speed cameras in use, I would support their use for keeping the traffic flow going even during the busy periods. However there the lanes were kept at 3 and were just narrowed so the reduction of a lane is lkely to be hell. Also just my luck as now I will not be driving the M27 twice a week as those roadworks stop, but the M5 instead as they start - bugger!

Before someone jumps down my throat the traffic didn't always flow but IMO flowed better that in other roadwords where fixed scameras slow the traffic in set places and speed it up in others and the "average" element seemed to keep people on their toes so less accidents.

Note: I hate Scameras as much as the next man (I live in Plymouth with 50% of all Devon's cameras and is not even the biggest city in the county) but do believe they have a place - just not for revenue raising like every B****y council seems to think they are for!!!

Having read the highways agency's announcment it clearly says "the work is on the southbound carriageway" bcensoredks both directions are down to 3 lanes and they are working on both sides. It took me over 30 mins to get from M4 junction to south side of Avonmouth today at 1330 and the northern carriageway was queued for 10 miles. This will be a nightmare

I'm just glad I'm not working in Bristol much at the moment. Went up for the first time this morning and it was heavy but moving northbound. Looked hellish southbound though.

I also note that the Specs scameras are actually hidden in the overhead gantries and not exactly "high visibility" (not that you can get to 50mph now rolleyes)

From Cribbs down, its absolute mayhem now: With the Avonmouth M49 roundabout roadworks jamming up the traffic coming off/onto the M4, and then obviously the traffic that backs up on the hill, its turned into a complete no go area.

I work in Avonmouth and have to drive from there to St George all the way around Bristol on the motorway, and it was backed up COMPLETELY from Avonmouth (M4 Southbound) all the way back past Cribbs, then Patchway, and even all the way back to the end of the M32 when I turned off, all due to various things.

Whoever planned all the work at the same time should be shot! Why on earth the Avonmouth roundabout needs widening I don't know!

It's fun for those of us living in Portishead, not only is the A369 / M5 junction completely gridlocked in the morning meaning the Portbury Hundreds is stationary (and loads of people consequently try to short cut through Sheepway which only serves to compound the problem) but the road to Clevedon is closed for the next month for roadworks so that particular escape route is also removed. This leaves Naish Hill as the only road out of the town. This morning there was a car broken down just before the junction at the top so only one car could pass at a time. Result was it took 25 minutes to get to the top of the hill, traffic was queued back down to Clapton-in-Gordano.

If it carries on like this for a year I think I'll be jumping off the suspension bridge!

Went over today and it looks like the resurfacing machins runs on rails so hopefully will result in a nice smooth surface. If thats the case it will be worth all the agro as before in the tvr it makes you feel sick going over it.
