It looks like I'm going to be moving to Taunton having landed a 6 - 12 month contract there...

I'll need somewhere to stay (obviously)...either a sensibly priced hotel/B&B or a flatshare. Will probably only be there Mon-Thurs (3 nights) so I don't think it will be worth the additional cost and hassle to rent somewhere outright myself, but the flat/house share option appeals because I'll be able to leave a few things behind from one week to the next.

TVR or motorcycle friendly parking would be a bonus, but not essential.

Can anyone recommend where I should be looking? What areas I should avoid? Walking/cycling distance of TA1 2DN would be a nice change to the commute I've been doing until recently.

Hi Paul,

You'll be at the Admirality then, or the Merc dealership next door?

It's a good town for cycling around. I live in Trull which is tacked onto the south of Taunton and can cycle into the town centre in 15-20mins and I'm not fit (although after an evening in the Perkin it always seems to take a lot longer to get home... drink). Mate of mine lives about half a mile up the road and he cycles to work at the Hydro from there.

Don't know too much about renting. When I first moved to Taunton I rented a one-bed house in Allington Close (part of the Blackbrook area which is about half a mile south-east of your work) but that was twenty-odd years ago!

Areas to avoid would be Lambrook and the immediate vicinity of your work (though at least you have Asda close by for those lunchtime snacks), Priorswood can be nasty in parts too. Generally the south and the west of the town (Blackbrook, Holway Green, Chestnut Drive / Shoreditch Road, Galmington, Comeytrowe and Bishops Hull) are the favoured parts, though there are some very nice bits to the north of the town too but not so good for cycle-commuting. Probably best to stay south of the railway.

Cycling to work is a good idea (no, I'm not a tree hugger!) as it can be Gridlock City at times. If I worked here (I commute to Brissle) I'd cycle or nick SWMBO's scooter.

Cheapest gas in town is at Morrison's on Priory Bridge Road or at the Shell garage on the same road.

If I can thing of any more I'll post again.. cool

Staplegrove Lodge do long term rents, its a b+b about a half hour walk, 15min ride from your work.
Their prices are normally very very good and do a cracking breakie!
If you do search on google you'll get their website.
Its my ex's parents place, but id still recomend it as a place to stay.

I'm in Taunton 1 or 2 times a week. Was looking to buy a house until I ended up in negative equity...so I have to wait.

Anyway if any of you Tauntonites see a Silver Vectra with a PH sticker in the back window...thats me!

I'll make sure I carry a box of eggs just in case. What brings you down here so frequently? Not seen any sign of any potential customers large enough! (Not that I have a clue who you work for).

The company I work for was a spin off from Debenhams originally. So they are still based in Taunton. So I head down once a week or so to justify myself. smile
