Tell me about Bristol....?
Discussion
now then guys,
Thinking of moving back to the UK permanent and Bristol in particular. Just seems to tick all the boxes, there's work to be had, is a fun place and i can get out on my MTB on the weekends in all sorts of places near by.
Any thoughts on living in Bristol? Good idea, bad idea?
Places to avoid, places to go for?
Would probably be renting for a few years yet till i can maybe finally amass more savings than 3 jelly beans and a half can of mustard

Avoid - Southmead, St Pauls, Knowle West.
Nice (and expensive) - Clifton, Redland, Westbury-on-Trym (although the shops leave a lot to be desired), Stoke Bishop.
Bradley Stoke and environs is square miles of houses on estates that are all exactly the same.
If you live and work here, make sure your commute does not involve crossing the river Avon. You will learn why the first time the Avonmouth bridge is shut due to a lorry falling over.

That doesn't happen very often though does it. I commute across the river everyday and generally it isn't too bad, the benefits outweigh the disadvantages IMO.onomatopoeia said:

Any more for anymore?
The advise to look out Thornbury way is good if you are sure you want be Bristol-based with access to outdoorsy stuff (ie South Wales) or M5/M4 corridors You might find that Horfield and the like is an affordable compromise - cheap enough, easy cycle/bus to city centre but on the right side of town for a quick escape.
Me, I love the area, but have always worked in Brissol and lived in Bath. I walk/commute by train/walk, yet door-to-door for me is under 40mins. Which means plenty of Hoon time free at evenings and w/ends....

i lived in thornbury for twenty years, we called it "yawnbury". nothing ever happens there, its dull.
if you are still under fifty, avoid it and try somewhere like redland, cotham or southville, all within walking distance from the town centre, nice houses and a nice community kind of atmosphere unlike clifton which is over priced and full of students, there is no parking there and crime (theft from cars) is worse than people expect.
bristol is great, loads to do, some good shops, good access to everywhere, enough bars and clubs to suit all tastes, some nice cafes and things on the waterfront to while away the hours, i like the watershed. the public transport is crap and hugely expensive so you will need a bike or a car but cycling is really popular and there are cycle paths around centre. good access to the M4/M5, good rail links.... and home to Bristol City Footbal Club!
beaches like brean are nice and only 30 minutes away, or you have the forest of dean or the brecons which are not too far for a day out

Can't be much help with Bristol, Bristol - but if the 'burbs are suitable Chipping Sodbury's ok. No supermarkets , two good butchers, a bakery, fruit and veg shop, proper iron mongers, half a dozen pubs, wine bar, couple of Indian restaurants, Italian, Thai, Chinese takeaway and the great metropolis of Yate is two minutes away if you're a Tesco/Morrison person.
Half an hour to Bath and Bristol and not much more to Gloucester or Swindon.
Properties ranging from the affordable (where I live) to the ludicrously expensive.

bristol vastly over prices and crammed full of scum much better living on the surrounding commuter belt. Weston is a fantastic place to live btw
Depends on the area for the density of "scum". I live in Clifton, not too much scum there.I work in Weston-S-M. It has it's fair share. Saying that I may be moving to WSM, so can't be that bad.

wsm is full of inbread swampdonkeysHad a lovely little place which thankfully had direct access to the motorway. Amazingly considering how many new builds there are in weston they have not increased capacity of the roads system to join the motorway.
Genuinely regret selling the place, then I also regret leaving Chippenham and now live in Swidon. Its like BDSM of house owning
