Just found out that as my first placement with my new company that I will be based in Barnstaple, Devon. I have no clue of the area whatsoever.

I will be staying there for 6 months and need to rent a place.

Whats the area like?
Cost of living?
How much should I be paying for a modern 1 bed flat? (for some reason I cant find many flats for rent on the net in this area)

Is it a safe area?
Where should I rent and what place should I avoid?

General views on the place?

Any help would be greatly appreciated....

North Devon's great.

As with every town it's got its 'less desirable' areas. I've no idea on rental costs but the housing market is silly expensive compared to the wages. Things all depend on what you're after though of course. There aren't a huge amount of flats here unless you look in the tourist towns where they quite often have them above shops.

Roundswell is the most typically modern housing estate, but if your car's very low you need to avoid it like the plague as there are spped humps and lumps everywhere.

Head just outside of Barnstaple and things will be fine. Fremington, Instow, Yelland on one side of the river, Braunton and several (very) expensive holiday towns on the other. You could even head out towards Exmoor (proper driving roads smile ) to places like Bratton Flemming which is nice.

Thankfully you're coming here after the bridge has been completed because it's made the traffic congestion soooo much better. Even so, I'd say your best bet for commuting would be to try and find accomodation on whichever side of town your new work posting will be at.

Probably of no real use at all to you, but you're welcome anyway smile

If you send me your current address I'll mail you the property section of the local rag which may help a bit. There's not a massive amount in there but it will give you some idea of what you're looking at.

I live a short walk from the High Street and it's fine. I'm lucky to have off-street parking though. Most areas in town have a permit scheme that costs around £12 a year though so nothing serious.

As said before there are areas that are less desirable and I have lived not far from one of them but not had a single problem.

go to http://www.thisisnorthdevon.co.uk/ if you're still looking for a place as it should have the same properties as the local rag.
