Right, the time has come to rebuild a couple of old motorcycles I have in boxes in the garage. In order to do this I need an old workbench. Anybody any idea where I could find one around Bath/Bristol - I've tried all sorts of places unsuccessfully.

Do you mean a lifting type bike work bench?

Freecycle can be useful for this type of thing.

Alternatively, my local Wickes (Ashton Gate) are doing a really good looking workbench reduced at the moment. It looks at me enticingly every time I go in the shop. £40-50ish, if I remember rightly. Solid, heavy wooden job, with a vice n' everything. Like the kind you had in woodwork at school. Entirely unlike a B&D Workmate. Can't find it on their website. Guess what I didn't get for Xmas?

Nope, just a flat, steel or wooden-topped workbench.

Cheers Nobby, just gave them a call and they professed ignorance, but may nip over later this afternoon for a gander...

T'other alternative is to find a shop that is closing down.

When Littlewoods shut up shop in Taunton I bought a really nice steel framed, wood topped table they used to display goods on for a mere £10. Makes an excellent workbench!

Can't you just make one from a sheet of 3/4" ply and some 2x4? Mine only took twenty minutes (OK, I'll admit that it shows!) but is quite sturdy and didn't need any carpentry skills beyond the ability to screw two bits of wood together.
