If there's anyone from Plymouth here, I'd appreciate some advice..

I'm going to be working on the Business park, Williamprance road (was Brest Road apparently) for a few months and need to find a B&B, room, flat (not decided which yet, depends on this and that) and just wanted to know which directions the traffic is worst - this is assuming I can't find anywhere very close so won't need the car - there is the Future Inn which look nice, but is a bit expensive to stay all the time!

I drove out of town up the A 386 yesterday morning and it was pretty bad - I don't have any reason to want to stay in town as it's probably more expensive and there's no parking, so...

- is it worth considering anything west of the Tamar - is the queue over the toll bridge too bad too bother?

- I have seen somewhere at Yelverton - is the traffic coming in this way good or bad?

- Plympton any good, or does that mean queueing to get off the A38?

- anywhere else you would suggest, or warn that it's not a good area to stay - if I'm driving I'll be in a boring cheap hatchback so I'm not worried about parking something expensive on the street!

Thanks

John

Hi John,

I live in Plymouth (Peverell)

This might turn out to be one of those right place, right time moments...
I'm about to start working away for a few months in Bristol and am planning to get a lodger in to help pay some bills for a while.

I'm in a 3 bed Semi - I haven't advertised yet as the room (double) is being re-decorated right now.
If you email me your mobile number I'll give you a ring tonight and chat about your location/traffic questions.

Who knows, you might even fancy popping round to have a look.
Cheers

Graham

traffic on that rd in the morning & afternoon is a nightmare, best steer clear of Yelverton. Which Ind. Est. are you working on?
I drop my wife off to work at Derriford Hospital around 8.30 & avoid the a386 like the plague!
best bet- if your staying in Plymouth is to go the back way & get onto the a386 higher up at the Airport

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&hl=en&ge...

this way should save you alot of hassle on that road

cuts out most of the park & ride traffic

The Land Registry, on William Prance road, directly opposite the Future Inn

Was down at the HMLR week before last. The offer from Graham of a room at Peverell seems the best as you would almost be walking distance from it, probably fastest to cycle though.

John,

I Live in Roborough and (although I now work away in Portsmouth) I used to drive the A386 both ways each day. Whilst it is busy it is far far far better than it was before the George Junction was re-done and always flows (unless accident blocked) albeit slowly. The crux is you will be in a traffic Jam at set times of day but you can predict the time to make the journey quite well as it runs at around 15mph average. The other option is to do what I used to do when working in the dockyard Travel just before 0730, or as my wife does now (into Stonehouse) leaving Roborough at 0800 misses the three "heavy periods" of Dockyard 0700-0715, the Navy 0735-0750 and office workers/school runs 0815-0900. Basically you will find a time that flows. e.g. Roborough to Dockyard leaving 0725 - 15 mins, Roborough to Stonehouse leaving 0800 - 20 mins a damn site better than Portsmouth where I now work where 10 miles will take an hour!!!!A similar argument works in the evening.

Don't believe the doom mongers furious like 'Ol dirty (see you Sunday for the body lift - hopefully after this!! hehe ) about living up the A386 the better quality of life, cheaper but quality housing, parking, open spaces, clean air and closeness to the moors make it well worth while.

Oh and by the way you don't need to make your way passed all the speed cameras grumpy, revenue, sorry "safety" vans and city drivers to have a driving across the moor (inside the 40 mph limit of course)

In the grand scheme of things Plymouth is a small city. You have to bear in mind that people have different perceptions of rush hours.

I hear Plymouthians moaning about traffic all the time, but compared to everywhere else I've lived (Leeds, Birmingham and especially Bristol), the traffic issue is virtually non-existent.

It's all relative...

But yes, its not bad as cities go for a commute- 15-20mins & im home in Ivybridge

From Graham's to Crownhill HMLR is a pretty easy commute by any standard - as he points out Plymouth is a doddle compared to most major towns an cities.

I used to commute round the M25, so anything's easy compared to that! I just wanted to avoid living somewhere that was the worst possible commute (by Plymouth standards!)

Thanks for your replies.

John, if you haven't found anywhere we have a massive house and have a decent room plus small kitchen & bathroom to rent out. We live near the hospital so you'll avoid the traffic. Its quiet, and has off street parking etc.
