Yeah the roads aren't much fun around here at the moment! Haha

The road I take from Swindon to Upavon is normally quite interesting, for anyone who is also looking for some fun!

no, mr policeyman - there are no nice driving roads around Wiltshire - just opportunities to drive at the speed limit for essential journies to get where your going...

right, IMHO the best road is the one from Castle Combe race circuit to J18 of the M4.. If your coming from Swindon, as someone said take the A4 towards Chippenham - usually busy, lots of towns but some good sprints between them - one speed camera though, so keep your eyes open!)

Once in Chippenham, follow the signs to A420 Bristol - thats actually a good fun road too - nice wide etc (though if you turn off in Ford and head to Corsham, a very, very nice small road..), anyway, back to the best, so, take the 420 but follow the signs to Castle Combe - the nazi's have made that section a 50 zone now, but be patient, the moment your past castle combe it opens out as is fantastic. - slow for the couple of villages, but plenty of opportunities to open her up - though I'd reccomend taking it easy the first time through, get a feel for the corners (the S bend is second only to the downhill slalom on the 420) and then have a more spirited drive back wink

so yeah, dont bother, no-where to go, were all too sensible wink

A4 is quality, just watch out for the rozzers as said before,

I dont know what side of Swindon your on but you can either take the A419 to Cirencester,
or you can head out towards Lyneham from Swindon past the m4 roundabout (a3102)
once your at the roundabout by the Esso garage take the 2nd exit & follow the road out under the m4 bridge, you can take the 1st right past the bridge (Braydon rd) going towards cricklade & onto cirencester on the A419
& follow sign posts for the a429 (fosse way) to Stow on the Wold, you can go all the way up to Rugby if you get carried away
I used to do this every friday night, after finishing at RAF Lyneham, its a good road if you dont get stuck behind anyone....sorry its so long windedpaperbag

Hehe - I thought it was only me that had discovered that piece of road.
I drive it 4 or 5 times a week, usually late at night or early morning when there's no traffic.
The sequence of bends that include the S bend you mention are fantastic (although so far I've had to tow 2 vehicles out of the hedge there where they've got it wrong).

Not sure if you've tried it, but the B road that goes from this road to Malmesbury is pretty good too, if a little harder to learn.

How right you are, Staples 2 Naples transport indeed (sadly now scrapped in Rome)

S/W meet up / hoonage sounds good to me, Daz organised one a couple of years ago that took in an early morning hoon before lunch at a pub near cheddar - another like that would work?

from Lynhan take the Chippenham road down over Lynham Banks
Awesom bends Not good on a bike if heading towards Lynham as there a few killer potholes (more like steps) on the racing line

I *may* have said out loud that a BBQ at ours would be a good idea - do *NOT* believe Fidgits when he claims this is true (him and Mr E are currently racing other PHers online).

Soooooooooo local pub with good car park just off J 16 anyone? smile

hehe

As if I would say anything wink

I may be up for having a BBQ at mine - my place isnt much, but a decent garden, probably reasonable parking... we would just have to wait for the weather to turn first!

Oh, and good pub off J16 - gotta be the Churchill (though i cant do the next 2 weekends!)
