The Portway is closed outbound from Bristol @ the Bridge Valley Road junction.

As I passed on my pushbike this morning, it's clear that something's come off the road at Sea Mills and taken out a large section of the old iron railings and gone over the edge, so I guess there's going to be a recovery operation underway for some time.

Can't find a travel report on this yet, but the police were only just responding an hour ago.

Should cause some fun & games with the traffic.

There was something on the local news just before 8, but as you say there's nothing on the website.

I can think where it was- The DC section just after Roman Way. Not sure what it is with that stretch of road, I know of many accidents within the last year on the same stretch, including a nasty FATAC with a chap in a Transit who hit a tree.

Think it might be a combination of relatively narrow lanes, high kerbs, the corners and also an waful lot of standing water- I've aquaplaned there before and it isn't clever! (Particularly in a BMW E39 estate barge with cruise control on!)

Actually, it was just before Roman Way (heading outbound).

Thinking about it, there is a patch around there that collects a lot of standing water when it rains; I've been near-drowned on my bike by tsunamis from passing artics many times just there. Sounds like she could have aquaplaned into the kerb, flipped up and smashed through the barriers quite easily then.

I saw two police cars there when I drove into Bristol around 7.10 this morning and about 15mtr of barrier missing. I don't know how steep the bank is at that location but did think it was fortunate the tide was low.

I'm fairly sure it was around the same spot where I had a little aquaplaning action last night.

Get a speed camera installed, quick! Come to think of it though, I have occasionally seen our little friends parked up on the layby before this section outbound, and at Sylvan way inbound. And, indeed, just before the suspension bridge inbound- Rather a futile location due to invariably stationary traffic well beyond the layby!

Does sound from the limited views on here that it's a dodgy stretch of road though- I hate overtaking artics within it due to the narrow lanes. Add a minor altercation with the kerb and some standing water- Good night Vienna!

And that exact bit of road on the outbound is wher eI had my aquaplaning misdemeanour!

I think it's pretty much vertical just there - I'll have a rubberneck on my way back tonight.

Decent stretch of road that has been ruined by idiot road planners IMHO. Used to be able to travel along there a lot quicker. hehe

As regards aquaplaning, I'd suggest that as a main arterial road in and out of Bristol, the road engineering must be brought up to scratch so that there are not bloody great deep puddles catching out crap drivers.

Many moons ago I went through some standing water there in my Cit AX, it was fine. My mate was following me and his car went all over the place. God know what would have happened if I hadnt cleared some of the water out of the way first.

AX- Skinny tyres. Less aquaplaning! Happy days.

Looks like she was quite lucky - the DC does a subtle S-bend exactly where she's lost it and she went straight on and through the barriers.

A couple of feet earlier and she'd have hit a lamp post head-on, a few yards later and she'd have ended up on the railway line rather than the river bank.
