Just doing the background work before I take the plunge biggrin (Normally I do that when it's already too late.) Anyone know if we've got any good Jaguar independents in our area?

Just found this place He's an ex Jag/Bentley mechanic, and judging by the metal parked outside has a lot of experience. I'm going to be using him for the ZT (And he's just sorted the aircon).

Drive past NM Jags every day.

Are you sure you're old enough, Yertis?

Oh I know that place, used to drive past on the way to Dorset. They sold american stuff there, Corvettes etc, years ago.

In my head at least I'm probably not quite old enough... but 4.2 litres and 400bhp for ca. £25k? MechS is alot younger than me and he's got a Rover FFS! wink

Been looking at Porches (too small) and Aston DB7s (too expensive and seem a bit delicate and old now, too much of a statement also). Can't face yet another boring Audi, hate BMs, a Jag XKR seems the obvious choice. Driving one this afternoon, so may well change my mind.

Just so long as you don't expect it to be any bigger inside than a Porsche...

There's not much in it is there but I think it's a bit bigger. I'm trying not to do German again.

Now I've driven it I'm not sure. I don't really like automatics. It reminded me a bit of my Scimitar (though that's a good thing really). Fast though and handled better than I expected.

I'm hopeless at buying cars. frown

Thought at first that you might be buying an E type!
If you want to get away from the German marques, might I suggest a Monaro.
The earlier 5.7 models are available for less than £15k. Practical as in 4 proper big seats & a big boot, cheap to service, not bad mpg (better than the XKR), bullet proof old school Chevy V8. My two HSV saloons were the most reliable cars I've owned.
But above all you'll have massive fun.

Good idea Tom. Where's a good place to look?

Try the classifieds section here on P/H & also Autotrader. Worth looking up the specialist Monaro dealers on the Vauxhall website, but I've heard that most of these are useless with the exception of Greens & Picadors. The newer 6.0l models have much smaller boots due to the relocated petrol tank to meet US safety regs.
The HSV/Monaro forum is essential viewing. Trawl through that & you'll find the answers to all your queries.
I'd say prices will drop further as the new Vauxhall VXR8 (HSV R8 Clubsport in Aus.) has just been launched. I think a few Monaro owners will trade up to one of those.
The standard brakes aren't really up to the job, but AP's are available for c.£2.5k. Further mods. are really limited to how much you want to spend.
I can recommend supercharging though biggrin

Just make sure if you go to NM Jags that you don't deal with Anne. She is ex Wellsway BMW and can be best described as a NIGHTMARE.

Keeping the AllRoad, which is very capable, saying sad farewell at last to the 100S4. Nothing wrong with it, other than it's looking a bit old-fashioned now, and a couple of clients have remarked that they didn't think it (or the AllRoad) projected the right image for someone in my business.

The Jag was nice but really too cramped in the back and didn't give me much of a buzz. Couldn't hear the V8, so not much point in having one IMO.

I think you'd love it. Old stylee muscle car, combined with just enough of the right sort of modern technology & safety. All at a bargain price.
Do factor in the cost of the AP brakes if you look at one which doesn't have them. IMO, fitting AP's is an essential mod. one that I'd do before anything else.
Again, study the HSV/Monaro forum & feel free to call for a Monaro (& Whippet) chat.

I think I may know the woman you mean, can't recall ever knowing her name though. Years ago, I went in to Wellsway (when it was on the Wellsway) to look at a used 735i. The saleswoman proceeded to tell me that I should have a 5 series instead. Fair point, execpt I'm 6ft7in, 18 stone & I knew that the then 5 series wasn't comfy for me. But I sat in one again, just to prove it to myself & her.
She just would not believe that I couldn't get comfy & started telling me that you settle into the driving position & other nonsense. I wasn't prepared to argue with her, so I just walked out.

Certainly will Alec. Nothing much has changed since I last described the car to you, except it has a 038 Coil Pack conversion on at the moment. I'm probably going to put back the OEM bits though (specifically replace the other POS).
