Looks like I am relocating and the job is in Bath centre.

Not knowing anything about the location, could people in the area sugest villages to live and have an easy commute to Bath centre.

Schools will also be a factor, my kids are 6 and 9.

Suggestions please.

Kind Regards

Graham

Driving into and out of Bath can be a pig, and parking can be a bit of a nightmare. I used to work in Queen Square, and the gorgeous building soon helped me calm down after being stuck in traffic ... my advice ... start early.

Can't help with schools, but if you want to keep some housing costs down, try looking at the Box, Bathford, Kingsdown areas and maybe a little bit beyond ... and still easy to get into the city.

Thanks.

£250 - £300k budget.

Don't fancy massive commute time, 30 mins by bus or train really, but depends on the right property I find and how far away it is.

Queens Square is where the office is going to be.

Looked at Box and Bathford on internet and seems to nice and not too far out.

The problem you'll have is the traffic in Bath is so bad in rush hour that 30 mins will be your minimum. I live in Bath on the SW side and work on the East side - it takes me 30 mins to drive the 4 miles to work any time after 8am.

Keynsham has a station into Bath as does Bradford on Avon for example.

Westbury is the minor terminus for that area and allows direct trains to Bath as Ewen says, but its not all that quick. Chippenham is 10 minutes from Bath on the main Bristol London line so trains every 30 mins or so am and pm.
I used to live just outside Frome and drove through Radstock, PSJ and Dunkerton to the Park and Ride at Odd Down. This took about 40 minutes including the bus ride.
As has been said Bath is a bit of a pain to get into from any direction.
If this is ok it opens up lots of small villages around Kilmersdon, Leigh on Mendip, Coleford etc which are very picturesque but not exactly the centre of civilisation. Schools are fine for littlies but more of a trek for secondary. Oddly its quite well catered for for private schools if thats your requirements.
There is also Babington House which is nice for a meal or as a leisure club.

yeah, depending on 'cost' you could live in a village just outside Chippenham (lots) drive in (5-10 mins) park and take the train..

Queen's Square is an easy walk from the station, parking notso hotso.

I can park at my office on the Lower Bristol Road and drive in most days from Castle Cary, which is about 30 miles due south of Bath. Takes an hour to get in in the morning and 45 minutes to get back in the evening.

Or a bit less than an hour and three-quarters by bike...

I wouldn't want a longer journey, but it's generally a 40-minute hoon followed by a 20-minute stop-start, which could be worse.

It's not a cheap part of the world anymore, but it's easier to get into Bath from the south than the other directions.

I can definitely vouch for that, living in one of those mentioned villages smile

I can definitely vouch for that too, but see it as an advantage having lived in the big smoke for 11 years previously. I find it's great to be out in the sticks one minute then be able to get a fix of city life/culture not many minutes later.

It may not be the city, but there's a lot going on socially if you're up for some pub team games etc. Very friendly round here on the most part. smile

Anyway, won't big it up too much, it's our little secret wink

If you like top quality rugby, you'll need to find somewhere to the west of Bath - to cut down your travelling time to the Memorial Ground...

if you don't mind a slightly longer travel time we have 3 properties for sale in Holcombe, which is picturesque and extremly quiet.

However to get the travelling time you require, you will defo have to be in the center of Bath as Ewen said...

So where are you then? We lived in Old Coleford for 5 years until about 18 months ago. Thought it was great and didn't really want to move but work is in Swindon :-(

I live in Keynsham, which has a train station and a direct train to Bath Spa takes less than 15 minutes. Schools are very good too. Keynsham is a small town rather than a pretty village but that means you get shops, library, pubs, restaurants, leisure centre (with pool) etc. Let me know if you want any further info.

I live in Westbury and find the commute to Bath pretty easy.

Either a 30 min train ride or a 45 min drive. Choice kinda depends on your ability to park when you get there though.

Been here 5 years and very happy with the area and schools, my kids are 7 & 5.

Good luck

Thanks Dave, been looking at Westbury and probably be the one to go and visit.

Are the area's surrounding the train station ok. Seen some properties within walking distance of the station (approx 1/2mile) which are reasonable.

Good to hear about the schools.

Thanks

Hi Graham,

Most of the town is ok, the only place that I would avoid personally is the Oldfield Road area.

I live on the outskirts of the town towards the Trowbridge end which seems to be the sought-after area and is no more than 10 mins walk to the station.

If you want any further details feel free to email me, I'm on hols next week, but therafter i'd be happy to help where I can.

Dave
