Holy sweet Jesus of Nazareth!

Somerset county council and Taunton Dean are to buy IT services from IBM in a bid to save money!!

The mere idea that anyone believes this will save money is laughable. Every project I've ever had the misfortune to be involved in with these guys has gone over budget and often had severe impact to QoS

no, and the joke is anyone who expects this to not have a serious over run should be shot.

What will happen, I will bet my left testicle, is that the intial lead project will take about 18 months longer than expected. Of course the council will have negotiated a compensation clause for such events but IBM will be able to prove justifyable reasons - such as the councils lack of information etc so they wont have to pay.

Also by that point they will be so far into having all the systems as theirs that the council can do sweet fa about it other than to terminate contract at a $$$$$ fine. Then IBM will outsource what it can to India to put the icing on the cake.

Some councilor somewhere is about to become very rich indeed.

So you think IBM are any worse than the rest, really? By the time they have sorted final agreed specs, it will all be antique cr*p when it's delivered.
