It's my Father in Laws 80th Birthday and we are looking for somewhere nice for a good meal. He doesn't like curries and "foreign" food just well cooked plain food. We want somewhere , not a pub, where the girls can get dressed up. The first choice was Hinton Grange but they are fully booked. Any of you gourmets know anywhere that fits the bill?

Coombe Grove Manor is also a good choice.

Or the Royal Crescent Hotel Bath

The Hudson is very good so long as you book on the first floor - downstairs is for the poor people.
If you're fishy people, then One Fish Two Fish maybe more up your street - excellent! (wine's a bit pricey though)

I wouldn't go near it now. It used to be excellent but the last two times I have been there the food has been awful and the service pathetically slow. The Upton Inn www.uptoninn.co.uk/ just round the corner is infinitely better, but still a pub restaurant and not a patch on Ston Easton or Coombe Grove Manor. I would strongly suggest the White Hart at Ford, near Castle Combe www.english-inns.co.uk/EP/WhiteHart-Ford/index.htm or, if you don't mind Bath and fancy going grand, the Priory Hotel www.thebathpriory.co.uk/.

The worst recommendation in PH history, a truely vile place. This is the best place in the area I've eaten at recently, had a wonderful evening, superb food and excellent service. www.dukesbath.co.uk/cavendish/index.php

No snobbery from me, but the one time I went to Colleys I was distinctly underwhelmed.
The food was ok but the whole experience left me rather cold.
Then again, there are those that like to be dictated into when they can sit to eat etc., as I imagine it reminds them of their schooldays...

I don't think that expecting decent food and good service when I eat out makes me a snob.

TGI's may be okay for an 18th Birthday bash, but not an 80th! If you read the original post he wants somewhere a bit special where they can get dressed up; you'd look overdressed in clean jeans in a TGI.

Or there's the Hotel du Vin in Bristol - not tried it myself, but highly recommended. Dead posh too.
