Hoping that a PHer from Bristol / South Wales can give my mind some peace.

I moved into my flat at Christmas, its in Kingswood and faces East. If I stand at my front room window, directly in front of me is Warmley, then Wick and in the distance Tog Hill. If I then look round to the right, I can see the big "aerials" at Lansdown, nr Bath, up by the racecourse.

If I look to my left, say 45 degrees, I can see very much further as the land slopes down a bit. In the very distant distance, I can see a tower on a hill. It can be seen by the naked eye and through binoculars, it looks like the Purdown radio mast that overlooks Horfield. Its not that because (a) its too far away and (b) its in the wrong direction.

Has anyone got any idea what it is, where it is and how far from Kingswood it is?

Can you work it out from Streetmap - use the scale that shows OS maps and look for the mast symbol

There's a transmitter on Westerleigh Hill in roughly the right direction.

I've got the local OS maps, so given a bearing it should be fairly easy to work out...

Hi Mech,

Don't think its that one, it looks much further away than that. I have sent you my postcode so you can streetmap it, if you don't mind, as I'm not sure what I'm doing.

Westerleigh is only a few miles away, I would guestimate that the tower I'm looking at is 15/20 miles from here.

I been thinking about this, looking at multimap & trying to see the direction yourt looking in, could it be as far as Leigh Delamere? Isnt there a mast over that way?

It's a PITA to work out on streetmap as it's hard to keep a bearing. I'll have a look on paper this evening.

There's a mast marked just to the South of Avening, between Tetbury and Nailsworth - could be it?

There's at least one around Hawkesbury Upton/Hillesley/Alderley area which sounds like the direction that you are looking towards.
I can't remember exactly where it is but I have seen one when walking in the area.

There's a mast at Ozleworth in Gloucestershire. Not a tall mast, more of the medium, stocky type. Looks to be about 20 miles from Kingswood, roughly North East. Could that be the one?

Better late than never.

I had a job to Nailsworth on Thursday and decided to nail this once and for all. I drove up the A46 and the mast is on the left hand side about a mile off the road on top of a hill. The nearest place seems to be Ozleworth...
