Apparently the M5 is closed both ways between Avonmouth and Burnham on Sea because of a chemical spill at Weston-super-Mare. Not expected to be clear until 03:00am.

Find alternative routes home folks...

Got snarled up in this, and was luckily able to scoot around from Avonmouth round the back over to the original bridge and then back into Bristol via the M48 and then M4/M32...

I would NOT like to be getting south or through Bristol tonight....

FFS!! Took me 2 hours to get home (normally 45-50 minutes). A38 stop/start all the way. Ended up going cross country to avoid the queues. Getting out of Bristol was fun too...

I've since learned it was a lorry shedding some gas cylinders under the J21 roundabout. Hope the fer gets massivly fined. Also, for some fed up reason the police figured it was a good idea to close the M5 at Avonmouth to avoid having HGVs jamming up smaller roads near Weston. So gridlocking Bristol was a better idea was it? Fing morons. And how the fk does it take so long to clear away? It happened at ~3pm, so ample time to clear before the 5pm "rush hour".

And breath

Been reading this with mounting horror - I have to get to Corsham near Chippenham for 10pm, from Junction 22 of M5. I'm on night shift. I w about to set off for a cross-country drive when I checked the RAC site and that shows congestion cleared. Traffic England also no longer shows the M5 closed. So I'm going to brave trying for the M5. If it is open then at least they are way ahead of schedule:Traffic England was initially advising clear time of 3:30 am.

I think some hysterical reporting on local radio helped to make this all much worse than it should have been. There was talk of 24 hour motorway closures and all sorts.

AS it turned out, when I went home at 7:30 there was absolutely no sign of anything, so it was competely cleared within 3 hours.

Apparently the delay was because the lorry load was compressed acetylene tanks, which had to be declared safe before they could remove it.

Cycling up the Portway at 6pm, the queue in looked like it was all the way back to Avonmouth. Nice.

For only once, I was glad I had to drive out towards the wrong side of Bristol.

One bonus was that the M48 was empty although shat my pants when pootling along and a massive branch flew up and hit my screen!!! eek

I say massive, by that I mean it 'sounded' like a tree, but probably was just a small sapling
