Hey all,

Decided to be renegades, and disappear off to Wales today, rather than meet the Elise boys

Herein is a description of the day:

Met at 7:30 and moaned about the weather.

Drove to Treorchy via Cardiff, and the Rhondda. Moaned about all the motorway and the weather.

Did the A4061 Treherbert Pass, scared a family (twice) in a Scenic then the A4059, giggled a lot, turned around and did the A4059 again. Twice. Moaned about the weather.

Took some arty farty pictures (as good as we could) on a particulary Evo like corner, and additionaly some video. Moaned about the weather. Again.

Then booted it up to Brecon, then along the B4520 to Builth. We giggled and soiled our pants in equal measures. A very scary road in places, with at least two jumps (clean air made) and numerous dips with corners on. One of which caused me in my Golf to have a 'small' moment, which was neatly caught, but made me sweat a bit. The weather cheered up a bit. Nice.

We then got to Builth, and discussed 'moments' and agreed that we wouldn't go back that way. It also started raining again.

We had decided to do the A483 to Beulah, then down to Llandovery, and then back to Brecon via the A40. It got very foggy. Reasonable road, although minimal passing places, to which Alex got caught behind traffic on - I managed to get the jumps. Stopped being foggy. But continued to be rainy.

Got to Brecon, filled with some fuel, and Alex met some wierd bloke with some BMW or something, who proceeded to think that Alex wanted to know that he had done 250k in his. Nice.

Tea, cup of, and a burger was the next port of call, to which we blatted back along the A470 toward Cardiff, to that bendy bit with the burger van on. Once there, I made Alex drive my car back and forth a bit, because I've never seen it driven properly, and smiled. I thought it made a nice noise.

Alex smiled lots when I brought him a burger and coffee. I smiled too, with the warmness of tea inside me. Chit chatted about sad things like insurance, which car to get next and how the Elises on the Mendip Blat would have probably fallen off the road, or given up. Or something.

Decided enough was enough and moseyed home.

What a days driving - cheers Alex...

Photos and Vids here

Vital statistics:

5:05 hours driving
255 miles driven
50 mph average
Avg MPG: 23.5 (eek)
Cups of tea drunk: 2
Elises passed and annoyed (over the weekend): 2

Yes, a very good morning all round. Cracking roads, considering how close i live to wales it's shameful i've not explored more.
Weather made things interesting, but we summised it's probably better that it's really wet than slightly damp, as the rain does seem to have cleared some of the rubbish off the roads.
Didn't have as many "monents" as i though i might have done, which is encouraging. I'm now very practiced at recognising red Golfs from a distance, Neil's is a bit quick (and he's a class1 nutter ) and the whole front wheel drive thing suits the conditions. Plus i had crap tyres, and no LSD, and, and....

Firstly, is your name Alex or Alec

Secondly, which of said roads are close enough to Cheltenham for a shortish blat out in an evening or weekend?

I am planning to take the roads out to Chipping Campden (via winchcombe?) when the cossie returns from having its gearbox done - are you familiar with these roads?

Thirdly - when I first saw the thread title it sounded like something else which would be quite interesting..

Go down to blockbusters and hire GoldenEye on DVD and work out Agent006's first name (Sean Bean's character).

Alternatively.....

Clicking on his profile should give you a hint. It'll also show that he has his own double garage. GIT.....

Wales isn't really close enough for a short blat. Forest of dean is quite good, head for Colefored/Cinderford, but beware they're having a speeding crackdown after loads of teenagers binning it into the trees.

My fave local route is Cleeve>Gotherington>Prescott>Gretton Fields>Toddington>Stow>Bourton>Andoversford. Variation of the same being coming back along the road past Lower Swell from Stow.

The road up from Corse to Malvern is also a stonker.

Once you got to Llandovery rather than heading back to Brecon on the A40 you would have been better taking the A4069 to Llangadog and then onto Brynamman via the mountain road. You could then have dropped back onto the M4 via Pontardawe and still been home in time for tea and buns.

Glad you enjoyed the A4059, it's currently my favourite road in South Wales. The B4520 is a fantastic road but as you say is very scary in places.
