A new campaign to reduce the number of young drivers and passengers
being killed and injured on local roads has been launched – with
flowers.
Road safety campaigners will be giving away yellow roses to young men
and women – with a reminder to drive safely and sensibly to avoid an
accident in which someone they care for could be seriously injured or
even die.
The “Keep the Romance Alive†campaign has been launched by the
Safety Camera Partnership because of concern about the high percentage of
young people involved in crashes.
Forty-two people, aged between 17 and 25, were killed in car crashes in
Avon and Somerset in the three years up to April 2005, with another
319 seriously injured.
David Gollicker of the Safety Camera Partnership said: “Almost a
third of all car casualties in Avon and Somerset are in the 17-25 age group
which is why we have decided to focus on young drivers in this
campaign.â€
The Safety Camera Partnership has also used TV and cinema advertising,
featuring yellow roses, in its attempts to reduce road casualty rates.
Mr Gollicker said: “The majority of the young drivers killed and
seriously injured in accidents on local roads in the past three years were
men - with more young women suffering serious injuries while travelling
as a passenger in a car.
“Speed is a factor in many of these crashes. Sometimes the drivers
are impatient or in a rush to get somewhere. Others simply drive fast
because want to show off their cars and impress their friends.
“The statistics show that young drivers are more likely to be
involved in an accident when they have passengers of around the same age in
their car.
