Folks, still house hunting, (when I get the time which is rarely), and have found something interesting looking on Kings Weston Lane, which I gather is Shirehampton/Avonmouth way. Interesting means its got a double garage, oh and a few bedrooms and stuff..

Gather its pretty close to a council estate which I've heard is the reason why the price has dropped and the place not sold, (won't be using that agent to sell my place - not the sort of thing a vendor would want to be said).

Don't know the area, but wondered if anyone here does..

Not the most salubrious of areas; stuck betwixt the chemical hell-hole of Avonmouth and some grotty housing estates.

Having said that, you are at least a bit nearer the open countryside than a lot of places and have easy access to the M5.

Thanks Pete. Thats pretty much what I thought.

Finding some good places now I've started a more serious hunt, but the key requirements of garage, good pub and curry house within walking distance and nearby nurses home are starting to have to be compromised.

Funnily enough, as I've been giving my Sheffield address for papers etc to be sent to, they obviously assume I know nothing about the city. The chemical hell-hole was described to me as a 'thrusting and virbrant port' whereas when passing on the M5 its always struck me as being a bit like Bophal the morning after..

Don't know what price range you're looking at, but all those requirements (assuming you mean nursing home) could be satisfied in the BS9 postcode area, specifically Westbury-on-Trym / Henleaze.

I knew as soon as I typed nurses, it would come back as nursing..

I've fond memories of student nurses from when I was a student here a few years ago. Seem to remember one or two of the qualified ones in digs close to the BRI were pleasant young ladies too..

Try & stay in Shirehampton, definately not Lawrence Weston, my auntie lives in Mancroft Ave just off Kingsweston lane & i wouldnt live next to her... Most Lawrence Weston houses are ex local, non traditional construction, (lang eze & wimpey no fines type) some with flat roofs & this can be a prob if you need a mortgage. If its priced cheap theres a reason...

You could look at places around Downend and Bromley Heath.

They both have everything you need including being close to the green-stuff, and is very quiet!

Plus You are close to M4/M5/M32

I think you really need to have a good idea on your budget before anyone can recommend good / ok / bad areas. If you want any advice on what banks & building societies are lending these days then send me an email & i can help you out as thats what i do, i've also lived in Bristol all my life (ish) so again i'll be straight with the areas that arn't so cool to leave a TVR outside...

Bristol is a funny place, some people like the Clifton area but its one of the highest for petty car crime, leave a nice car is St Pauls & no one will touch it (because your obviously an armed drug dealer).

Kingsweston is nasty - we've been looking at property round Henleaze/Westbury etc. and as a rule of thumb if it's affordable it's not anywhere nice!! You do need to be careful about BS9/BS10 postcodes - some of them are very nice - some of them are not!! They do require drive by's at the very least before you can even gauge them for value for money.

Especially true of BS10s - we had details for some absolutely cracking houses in BS10, all of which were rejected prior to viewing on the basis of a 10sec drive past.

BS10 includes the lovely Southmead estate, My Nan lives there & I wouldnt live next to her aswell as my Auntie in Lorri wesson....though up the road in Brentry its not to bad, as said previously you got to do a few drive bys at different times of the day/night before considering stopping .... & then possibly viewing a pad...

Yes, we included Brentry in the search zone (but excluded Southmead, for obvious reasons!). Some seriously nice-looking pads came up in Brentry, but they all had some obvious major flaw when you drove past (that the agents had cunningly overlooked / disguised in the details). As you said earlier, if the price is right you need to find out what is wrong...

Don't move there Simon, currently not on location location location's film list.

If you like that side of the city, henleaze is the better area, as is westbury on trym.
If you want a crime free area come and live in Bradley Stoke, approximately 2 coppers living on every street, near to M5/M4 and a stones throw away from M32.

Plus it gives me an excuse to go for beer/blat.

nothing wrong with a few nursing homes (a BS9'er here) although there does seem to be alot of the them thinking about it. but yes the BS9 area gets you pretty much what you seem to want. we have a double garage, off road parking, plenty of pubs nearby and the downs which is a big plus. but BS9 and BS6 prices skyrocketed in the past year and a bit so ive no idea what the average price is now.

Quite a bit, I'd have thought. We've been in BS9 for 3½ years and there's no way we could afford to move here now, if you see what I mean.

Estate Agent didn't even turn up for the viewing, (probably got lost as they told me there was no such place as Lawrence Weston and the place was in Shirehampton).. I'd not enough time to cancel it so as it was between 2 different places I'd arranged to look at, thought I'd drop by.

Cottage itself looks ok, but trapped between fenland/chemical works and the estate. Saw the chavviest blonde ever as I drove through. Micro mini skirt and knee high FMBs at 10am on a Saturday. Classy..

I think I'll carry on looking elsewhere..
