Thinking of a week somewhere in Devon or Cornwall. Preferably by the seaside, a decent choice of restaurants in walking distance serving quality food for evening meals and enough things to do to keep us interested during the day.

We had a great short break in Exeter a couple of years ago, stayed at Hotel du Vin (was The Magdalen Chapter then).

20 minutes on the train from Dawlish Warren & Dawlish, lots of great restaurants, Dartmoor and Dartmouth in striking distance.

Exeter has potential. Anyone know what Brixham or Teignmouth are like?

Brixham is pretty small tbh, so choice wont be great.

Surely if you want a selection of decent restaurants just head to padstow or around Newquay?

Exeter is fine, Teignmouth less so!

Or as suggested, Padstein etc. St Ives is lovely.

If doing Exmouth, do the river Exe Cafe, superb seafood on a floating restaurant in the middle of the estuary.

Exeter is a great base and plenty to see there alone. All weather entertainment with coastal walks on the estuary and indoor bits in town - RAMM museum, live music at the phoenix, more bars and restaurants than you could ever need. Lots of small independent shops/food places now too.

The North Devon coast is lovely, as is north Cornwall, both viable daytrips. Padstow, St Ives, Salcombe, Croyde, Sidmouth are all worth a visit.

I live in Exeter, grew up in Exmouth. Plenty to do in and around the city (underground passages, indoor rock climbing, RAMM museum) and only a short drive of fabulous beaches and Dartmoor too. You can hire bikes or kayaks from the quay and access the incredible cycle paths to exmouth or paddle down to double locks pub. Topsham is well worth a visit. Restaurant there called The Salutation is incredible. Michael Caines has just opened Lympstone Manor which has a Michelin star. Also train links to Exmouth or Dawlish beaches. As for restaurants in the city there’s plenty. Obviously all of your chains but some of the better ones are Bills, Cote, Harry’s, Lloyds. Some decent independent burger bars too.

Cafe on the Exe is stunning and pretty unique

Teignmouth as a town is pretty rundown, as is Torbay.

Feel free to fire me some questions if you need.

Quote " All table bookings are for a period of two hours. After this time, you may be asked to vacate your table. Please do not feel offended but as we are floating in the Exe Estuary our uniqueness means that we need punctual timings as not to impact other guests"
........... or impact on our profit margins !!!!

Paignton has it all, several nice beaches starting with the town beach itself with children's play park and lots of grass areas for nice days plus a range of restaurants and pubs all within a stones throw of the beach. Should it rain there is the multiplex cinema again on the sea front, shops of the seaside kind or Steam railway. Evenings offer entertainment in the theatre in Paignton or Torquay as well as several clubs if that's where your interests lay. Just outside of town there is Greenway where Agatha Christie would enjoy relaxing. Dartmoor is a short drive away with all it has to offer or maybe a trip to Exeter now just 25 to 30 minutes away thanks to the new link road out of the bay. Plymouth is perhaps 35 to 40 minutes away and Brixham, well who knows with the road works and traffic at peak times. Also just outside of town at Goodrington beach there is a Go Kart track and water park on good weather days or another big boys Go Kart track on the way to Brixham. Also there is a swimming pool/sports centre a short distance from Paignton town centre or a pool with wave machine in Torquay.
There that should keep you busy and entertained.

And then of course there are the fishing trips and boat trips day and night from Paignton harbour. Blimey it sounds a nice place, glad I live here.
