Somerset Village - Nice ones to live in
Discussion
Thinking about a big lifestyle change.
We are toying with the idea of selling our beautiful Thameside house in Reading and upping sticks to a Somerset village.
I would weekend commute, with a Wednesday night/ Thursday morning commute as well (excuse for another bike!)
We know very little about Somerset but would appreciate any input in where to be looking.
Criteria:
2 hours from Reading
Rural/semi rural
MUST have a pub
Ideally within 30 mins of coast
Active village community
Any idea’s?
Thanks.
Mods – I don’t know where to put this?

Then the first thing I'd suggest is get down here, have a look around, meet some people, see if you actually like it. A house in one of the neigbouring villages to ours was bought by a couple from London who didn't even bother to view it. They moved in, hated the reality of living in an old, damp thatched cottage miles from the nearest Costa and left within three months.
Not sure I'd class Long Ashton as a village any more. Maybe fifty years ago but it's got to be getting on for 7-10k residents now.
Moving from a Thameside idyll to a slightly grubby, crime ridden suburb of Bristol is likely to be a bit of a shocker.
I'd suggest one of the villages between Bristol and Chippenham. Not Somerset admittedly but probably more in keeping with the OPs vision of a cutesy village with a pub and village shop.
Have to put up with the tourists though.
Personally Thameside sounds pretty good to me, I'd stay put.

I would recommend Wedmore.
It's got 3 pubs , brilliant Indian ,post office , 4 women's clothes shops (sadly) and lots of other stuff going on , including a Real Ale Festival and an Arts Festival.
Wedmore is lovely, but as I found out in the middle of the night when staying there once, it's on a main trucking route... throughout the night! It's got 3 pubs , brilliant Indian ,post office , 4 women's clothes shops (sadly) and lots of other stuff going on , including a Real Ale Festival and an Arts Festival.
I don't live in Zummerzett. But my old man does, in Langport which is about 10 miles SW of Glastonbury, -we visit fairly regularly.
I have to say, whilst the Levels are a bit flat and drab for me in terms of landscape, the skies are big and it's a fascinating part of the UK. If his village is anything to go by, a nice, welcoming place to be. There seems to be a micro-climate there which is a bit dryer and warmer, (could be just be me). Transport links and access to M5 is pretty good. House prices are rising but not insane. Much prefer it to landlocked Hereford where he was before.
Not much help in terms of the original question, but I think it could be a very good move. All the best OP...

Contemplating the same move from overcrowded Winchester
Wedmore is I think a good call, lovely area and I agree the levels are so so different . Shepton Mallet area I think is on the up although the centre of town has a little way to go .
Frome I gather is on the up and there's a village near there called Mells ( not Wells ) that and the close area are very attractive but houses aren't the cheapest in Zomerzet
You need to spend some time there , find a few areas you think you may like and get some long weekends away
