Where to live near Barnstaple?

I posted this in Homes, Gardens, and DiY but it was suggested that it really belongs here in South West section.

My son has got a new job in Barnstaple later this year and is going to be looking for a house for him and his fiancée. Until she gets a job too they don't have any top price in mind, but would like to know from people who know the area where to avoid and where to concentrate on in, say, a five mile radius. They will have a reasonable income once she's set up so we're not talking about flats, but more like three or four bedroom detached. I may suggest they rent for a while to get the feel first.

I would recommend the Roundswell, Bickington and Fremington area's for starters, lots of new build sites and close to all amenities, i'm sure the estate agents will also give advice.

He hasn't moved in anywhere yet but the sort of places he's looking are within ten miles of the north side of Barnstaple: North Molton, Shirwell, Bratton Fleming - those sorts of places. Where he'll buy I can't say because the renting thing is a way of getting the feel. A maximum 30min drive is the benchmark.
