hi all
thinking of a job offer that will mean commuting from north swindon to reading
the hours are 8am start to 4:30 finish
what are your honest thoughts on this, reading seems a bit sticky in the mornings but am i likely to miss most of the rush hour traffic.
the actual m4 bit seems ok at approx 35mins its the reading end im concerned about.
so if anyone info on the traffic, times around reading, it would be good to get a real world account
thanks

I commute from North Swindon to North Bristol, but occasionally have to head east. The M4 stretch eastbound stretch isn't too much worse. However, it's getting down the A419 which is an absolute pain in the ****.

Depending on just how east you're talking (East Reading... Winnersh?), I'd possibly be looking at coming off at jnc 10 and coming back a bit, rather than trying to travel through Reading at rush hour.

I used to commute to Slough from Chippenham and it was a doddle. Cheaper than going by train too!

I used to get there for around 7-7:30 though which avoided all of the problems. If you have the chance to get there slightly earlier then I would do that...even if it is just to go to the gym or have a coffee. It was certainly easier than going to Bristol...that was a horrid commute! The M32 is just vile!

Easy. I regularly run from Melksham to Swindon, Reading, Slough, London. The motorways are generally fine, just aim to be at your destination by 07:30. Sure, it's half an hour early but it starts to become hell in Reading approaching and after 08:00. Rarely takes me more than 90 mins max from the moment I leave get to Reading Station, with or without traffic.

Go for it smile

i go to Theale from Malmesbury daily - 50-55mins max leaving at 6.30am, occasionally its a mare with M4 closures but 95% of the time its no problem.

My daily is a dark blue Mazda 3 Fastback. Her indoors drives the mk5 Golf (grey). In the summer the grey MX-5 will come out the garage.

Where in Reading? That's crucial.

(I lived within 15 miles of Reading for most of my life, now live between Stroud and Cirencester)

Will depend on times and which part of Reading, As said Reading can be OK or a complete PITA!

Should be ok as said, might get caught leaving reading on way home, depending on location

I used to do Chiseldon to Winnersh Triangle, 50 miles door to door and it took about 45 mins usually. This was about ten years ago so traffic is probably heavier these days, junction 15 certainly is.

A friend of mine lives in Oakhurst area too and he used to do there to Microsoft at Reading daily, said it was a bit of a ballache but not as bad as you would think. He now does Swindon to just inside the M25 4 days a week but is flexible on work hours there, gets in for about 10 comes home about 7-7.30.

Another Swindonite here in Stratton. We need to get the Costa meets going again.
