For the Rugby World Cup quarter final weekend, I am staying in Bristol for 3 nights with 3 mates.

What I am looking for is advice on how to have a great weekend in Bristol. There are no rules for suggestions, other than we need to cover off breakfast, decent pubs and evening "entertainment". Bonus point for random stuff to chip off whilst there.

Location wise we're staying at the Ibis Bristol Centre.

Thanks in advance.

The 'Waterfront' is a good laugh on an evening but you do get some idiots about, for somewhere a little more 'upmarket' head up to Clifton for some nicer bars, restaurants and if the weather is good I'd particularly recommend the Avon Gorge Hotel as the beer garden overlooks the suspension bridge.

Some nice little boozers in Clifton village too, a very shory stagger from the Avon Gorge Hotel but goes quiet fairly early by town standards. If you want a more lively area then consider staying at the Bristol Marriott Royal at College Green. It is very nice inside though more dosh obviously but has the benefit of being right at the bottom of Park Sreet and 100 yards from the lively centre of town (the tramway centre as many know it) and also the waterfront, If you have £££ that's where I would stay!

http://www.marriott.co.uk/hotels/travel/brsry-bris...

Also try Park Street, The Triangle and Whiteladies Road which has never ending bars, pubs and eateries. In effect it is one long mile or so of festivity. Corn Street is good too and from there you can walk around the docks, the waterfront and the tramway centre and be close to the Marriott if you decide to stay there. Plenty of fast food outlets, kebab vans etc. Taxis are plentiful and for the distances you are likely to cover very cheap. If you're looking for the more illicit side of city life then best ask via a PM or ask a cabby!!

If you prefer a few more traditional bars then there is king st, also great when sunny as lots of outside tables.

Also have the Hole in the Wall and Severn Shed just off Queens Square in the same area.

Have a good time!

Personally I would put King Street in the arse end of Bristol bucket. The Hole in the Wall, Severnshed and Mud Dock are ok. As mentioned, Clifton is significantly more salubrious.

However, much more importantly, you are a mere 10 minutes from Bath which is an entirely better city in my view.

Obviously it depends on what floats your boat, if you like the chain bars you have the waterfront etc, although this will involve side stepping fighting agro chavs..... IMO King St is more down to earth but is more traditional pubs (which I like), but saying that I am middle aged going on old :P

Agree on Clifton village, definitely spend one night of your 3 up in that area. If you fancy Bath it is a good night out too but probably doesn't make sense to come to Bristol for 3 nights and have to faff around with trains when you are hammered (although they are really easy!)!

Ps if you like steak you have 'Steak of the Art' round the corner which is good for a nice steak or 2!

If you like rock music The Hatchet pub is the place to go, a tudor house built in 1606.

But for macho rugby types, there's only only thing to do in Bristol at the moment and that is the Shaun the Sheep tour http://shauninthecity.org.uk/wink

Quite - what sorts of things does the gang want to do? Bristol's got a fantastic range of options in easy reach.

If it's just mindless drinking, get to the Coronation Tap in Clifton and see if anyone can actually finish more than 3 or 4 rather small glasses of ciders wink

Looks like that show will have finished by the time our festivities start, our Welsh cousins may be interested in a nip across the border though.

Mindless drinking will inevitably happen, I've been living over here since 2003 and have developed a taste for Old Rosie etc. my other buddies may have some catching up to do.

Now what about:
Good breakfast - Excellent Bloody Mary's are not essential but merit points will be awarded
Indian Restaurants - Should be plenty of note in that neck of the woods given the "import / export" heritage of the city
Gentlemen's Establishments - not for me obviously; but just in case the question comes up

Huge thanks for the help so far

An abundance of all 3 but my cabbying days ended over 7 years ago so my knowledge is now out of date (it all changes so bloody often!). Panache massage was good back in the day (allegedly), top of Blackboy Hill on the left, Highland Crescent I think? Not even sure if it's still there tbh.

Plenty of casinos if you have money to waste. Lots of good Indians too.

The raj on king street is the best Indian in Bristol end of. You have the naval volunteer and the beer empoirum opposite which are both good ale pubs. There are plenty of worse places to spend a night in Bristol. There is nothing good about the waterfront on a Saturday night....

Clifton is ok but the better places like the Albion, Channings and the Mall are always very busy at the weekend and you'll be fighting for space at the bar with the plethora of students who will return this weekend...

Avon gorge hotel et al are good if its dry and you're outside, if it's wet it's a trip wasted. Have to be honest, Clifton sausage is a mugging, 15 quid for sausage and mash in cramped restaurant with consistently bad service.

Nights out in Bristol can invoke lots of walking around so it's better to stay up or downtown imho

Watershed or mud dock for breakfast, both pretty good, not far from hotel either iirc

I haven't eaten in the Raj for donkeys years* but I have to say when I did it was very, very good indeed.

  • Disclaimer - past performance is no guarantee of future performance, meals may go down as well as up, or in this case up as well as down, do not risk more than you can afford to lose, always take a friend, avoid dark alleys at night, never go to bed on an argument or after a really hot curry, take some Rennie with you at all times, if lost ask a policeman and always have your cab fare home at the end of a drunken night.

La Rocca on the triangle for a great cheesy night club, cheap, clientele mainly doctors and lawyers.

Coronation Tap (as suggested)

Hausbar at the top of blackboy hill to finish the night off.

Stay in Clifton and the Centre for both evening and daytime activities and you won't go to far wrong

Ashton Court to hire mountain bikes is walking distance.

Cheers fella, is the city hopping because of the overflow from Cardiff for the rugby games? Looking forward to a very long weekend.
