Are they F:censored:G MAD??!!
Discussion
Anyone live in the Bristol area listen to GWR FM? They were reporting this morning that the City Council is planning to close Ladies Mile for 18 MONTHS. To 'cut down pollution and accidents'.
WHAT THE FK ARE THESE PEOPLE ON??????
Can't they see that all this will do is move the traffic onto Bridge Valley Road and other roads nearby, causing congestion, more pollution, more accidents and general chaos in these areas?
Who is the imbecile who thinks up these moronic ideas? And why haven't they been taken out and shot?
Bloody Bristol bloody city bloody Council. Why are they so determined to make motorists life a misery???

Are they talking about doing it 24/7, then?
There were murmerings a while back about closing it at weekends, which does make a certain kind of screwy sense.
{edited to add:} Don't think I've ever seen an accident or even heard of one on Ladies Mile - apart from me nearly squashing various cyclists and runners who choose to use the road at night without lights and/or in dark clothing

As far I can could tell it would be 24/7. And I've never heard of or come across an accident on Ladies Mile. All the accidents happen on Bridge Valley Road - where a lot of the traffic from Ladies Mile will end up.
The knock-on effects would be enormous.
Westbury Road (already a bottle neck) would be overwhelmed at rush hour. Similarly for Stoke Road.
Pembroke Road would also get worse, as its almost impossible to turn right at the top already and there'd be no point in turning left instead if access to Ladies Mile was removed.
With no traffic slowing to enter Ladies Mile from Bridge Valley or Clifton Down (zoo bit), the already difficult exit from Clifton Down (towards the bridge bit) would become impossible.
Well done BCC - another plan that will result in traffic chaos.
My ongoing theory (that gains more weight every time I hear of a plan like this) is that BCC are determined to screw up the traffic in Bristol so badly that they can justify bringing in a congestion charge. In fact, I'm pretty sure plans are already in place for one; its just a case of selling it to the public when the time is ripe.

If they introduce congestion charging, feel free to join me in the ensuing riot. Doing this in Bristol will kill any number of small businesses - and create more chaos as people struggle to find places to park outside the charging zone. I'm sure they will expect people to take the bus instead, but the bus network in Bristol would collapse if they did. It simply couldn't handle it.
Yeah - Ladies Mile and Circular Road both used to be NSL. The 30mph limit is relatively recent (my sister in law got talivanned on Ladies Mile in 2003 and I've recently seen a talivan (estate car stylee) on Stoke Road and Stoke Hill several times.
I have a feeling that LM and CR used to be private roads technically, and the limits came in when the local authority got around to adopting them. Could be bolox though.

Can anyone just confirm to me where Ladies mile is?
I live in Sneyd park, just off the top of the downs, and assume that the twisty road round the downs is the ladies mile?
Great fun very very ealry in the morning...
That's Circular Road. Ladies Mile is the (mostly) straight one from the water tower to the top of Bridge Valley Road.
I guess you don't live in Cardiff, then? {edit - ah, checked your profile; that explains it!)

Yup, moved to Bristol late last year - if you see me give us a wave (got an EVO sticker in the back window).
Back on topic though, yes closing that road would be a major pain in the arse, how the devil would you get to Whiteladies Rd from Stoke Bishop etc, without having to go round the houses?
On a similar note, where the fap would all the footballers park on a Saturday too? They'd have to go somewhere (for those not in the know, the Downs hosts the Saturday football matches - I've never seen anything like it - bloody loads of em!)
Stoke Road runs from Stoke Hill to Blackboy Hill and Ladies Mile is perpendicular to Stoke Road, meeting it roughly opposite the water tower.
Good point about the football parking; both Ladies Mile and Stoke Road are choccer with parked cars when the footy's on.
I'll give you a wave if I see you - it seems we're reasonably close neighbours now!
